Football match ends without score in Yirol West

By Manyang Mayom

June 2, 2009 (RUMBEK) — A friendly football match between two rival teams of Zalan and Ramciel ended in a tie on Sunday evening in Yirol West County in Lakes state.

Officials including the county authority presented the match as a wonderful event that in fact reflects togetherness among youth of Lakes state, where youth groups often organized on a clan basis have engaged in cattle raiding and other bloodshed. The match was organized by the special directorate of sport in the Lakes state Ministry of Information, Youth and Sport.

The two teams, Zalan and Ramciel, both have unique meanings: Zalan means sad while Ramciel means "meeting point of Rhinos."

According to Commissioner Agok Manyiel, the Zalan football team coming from Rumbek was composed of 30 people. He also added that this is not the first time a football competition is organized in Yirol West County and he referred to the Diocese of Rumbek, which has organized different matches among Yirol West County primary schools. He said their competitions were very successful. He concluded that this is now the first time the government organizes her own team to compete in Yirol West.

"I started to kick the football and now it is zero versus zero both sides, I hope the state government will support the players to carry on their career; this is wonderful match," said the commissioner. "In this competition we will select the best players that will actually represent the Lakes state level in outside competition such as inter-state competition."
