Grenade explosion injures 17 students in Sudan’s Darfur

KHARTOUM, Oct 18, 2004 (Xinhua) — A grenade exploded in a secondary school in Sudan’s western region of Darfur on Monday, injuring 17 students, the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) reported.

Three of the wounded were in serious conditions, SUNA quoted a medical source as saying.

According to an initial investigation, the bomb was taken to the school by one student, the report said.

Darfur, a troubled region plagued by a 20-month-long conflict between two armed rebel groups and the central government of Khartoum, has witnessed a severe humanitarian crisis.

A mini African summit on Darfur was held in Tripoli on Sunday, aimed to solve the issue within the framework of the African Union (AU).
