South Sudan’s opposition refutes rumoured death of top army officers

July 12, 2016 (JUBA) – South Sudanese armed opposition faction dismissed as “white lie” a claim by government officials that they killed their top army officers.

Sporadic shooting into the air rocked the South Sudanese national capital, Juba, on Monday night as soldiers loyal to President Salva Kiir celebrated their claimed victory after circulated rumours suggested that they had killed General Simon Gatwech Dual, Chief of General Staff of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO), during their four days of fighting in Juba with forces loyal to First Vice President, Riek Machar.

The forces were also marking the declaration of a ceasefire endorsed by both President Kiir and his first deputy, Machar, which has come into effect.

The circulated claim also said the deputy chief of general staff for administration and finance in the SPLA-IO, General James Koang Chuol, was among the dead.

Opposition leader’s press secretary however said the claim was not true, adding that their top army generals are well and safe.

“The claim is a white lie. The two top Generals are alive and well,” said James Gatdet Dak, opposition leader’s spokesperson.

He said the claim was a propaganda to try to demoralize their troops who were battling forces loyal to President Kiir.

Juba witnessed heavy fighting between rival troops since Friday until Monday with conflicting statements over which side started the fighting.

There are about 1,200 troops from the SPLA-IO deployed in the outskirts of Juba per the security arrangements agreement. SPLA forces loyal to President Kiir are believed to have deployed in and around Juba several thousands of their forces.

Over 1,000 soldiers are believed to have been killed on both sides during the four days of fighting.

Come to jebel kunyjur and see what is there if u can’t feel ashame yet of being defeated by 600 well trained Nuer soldiers. Spla-ig are 60,000 backed up by 73 war tanks, countless heavy machine mounted trucks and two gunships. One can ask what else can u give Dinka tribalist soldiers to fight the Nuer if this is not enough to execute ur plan of killing Dr. Machar? U shamed ur helpers!

            "Choldit" — real name: Chuol

What’s with you people and ridiculous, ever fluctuating numbers? How many times must you retards be told that there was (unfortunately) no plan to arrest or kill Riek? What transpired was retaliation for the deaths of 5 of Kiir’s soldiers. It was a message; a message meant to act as a bridle on any future inclinations and actions that you may feel like taking.

Even Sudan Tribune admits that Riek’s forces were dislodged from where they were headquartered so your use of the word "defeat" is laughable. If the objective was to kill Riek (and he deserves it) he would be dead. Do you still maintain that you’re a Dinka and not Nuer?

can u in reality think this war is not plan though LT Col George Alex and cpl Domach Koat were killed in the way u may heard of? What do u think promoted the Spla-ig to attack the Spla-io on Thursday in which five Spla-ig poor lifes were lost and what promote Spla-ig to deployed over 500 of its men in j1 on Saturday n attack Spla-io in an incident in which Spla-ig lost 237 n only Spla-io 35 lost?

What kind of defeat are you talking about? If the oppositions defeated the government; then they are nowhere to be found in and around Juba? Shouldn’t the forces who defeated the government be the one in control in Juba? Or maybe Nuer victory look different.

Crazy lies. First of all even with tanks and gunships and jets from Uganda you are still beaten so hard and lost a great lives. Lets just mound for the lost ones. R.I.P

"Beaten"? How exactly did they "beat" anyone when even they admit that areas they were quartered in were virtually overrun? There is no evidence that Ugandan jets took part in this, you hallucinating idiot. The Nuer returned in 2006 after failing to defeat the Dinka even when their masters were bombing us with a significantly larger and more advanced airforce than what we now have.

      Joseph Canada;

There is no point of saying "crazy lies" all you need to do is provide proof of live of that general on the video refuting his own rumored death! Just with hand held cellphone camera; is that a hard thing to do? If you don’t have that proof; then you look silly defending the rumor!

Thanks force 1 for the comment.!things that can be proved need to be done without delay. If he got his head in silver plate let him prove that by sending the pic else case over. Let talk to the world so we divert the shame on our pple. This war is a mistake of our time. We nearly make it to a peaceful nation once again after 2013. THERE WILL NEVER BE A NUER OR DINKA ALONE SS! Shame on tribalist!

The COG is alive planing what to do shld Kir and Malong keep on their criminal trend of activities. Don’t make wild wishes on him. He is a Nuer leader. Killing him in action (Kia) is not shame in Nuer prospect but can’t be a easier task that can be done by Dinka alone.

You lost hundreds of people in that unfortunate incident. I really don’t understand how you could possibly believe that you only lost dozens when even your leaders admit that they lost hundreds.

Killing of any South Sudanese will not solve our damned equation!!! The only thing Southerners in general will be known of is proving Northerners were right when they were claiming that killing between tribes will be the norm in the newborn nation.

Only 37 plus two officers were killed by cowardice Dinka Bhal EL Ghazel in cold blood. About 2,900 pure stupid foolish Dinka criminals soldiers with stupid mark that look like chicken legs on their faces are confirmed dead. The claimed was to boost back their morale because suffer a great lost beyond the limit of human being. Big shame for 60,000 cowardice Dinka dog soldiers being defeated.

2, 900 "confirmed dead"!? "Confirmed" by who, you uninspired little git. The "government" lost dozens of its fighters whereas you lost hundreds of fighters in a limited action with a message attached. Now, run along and relay to your brain-dead people these laughably implausible lies — they’ll believe it. It worked so well for Ngundeng and other charlatans in your society.

first of all i’m not fan of wars in south sudan. but let be factual, if government did loose 2,900, do u people think they would hv stop fighting. use common sense guys. in fact had they lose that number, Riek n his forces would hv been totally wide off. to my understanding, IG spla want to tell IO spla as who is in charge in juba. they 100% did not plan to kill riek. otherwise they wld hv done it
