Juba denies resignation of South Sudan vice-president

December 23, 2013 (JUBA) - South Sudan’s government denied on Monday that vice president James Wani Igga had submitted a resignation to president Salva Kiir Mayardit.

"It is not true that the vice president has resigned. I have spoken to him and he was surprised about these reports. He has now asked someone in his office to inform the public about this misleading information. This is the part of the propaganda to divide our people,’’ presidential spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny told Sudan Tribune on Monday.

Ateny said the he was not aware of any resignations from the government and that the vice president had told him that he would be with President Kiir under ‘‘whatever circumstances.’’

There had been reports that the Wani had submitted a resignation letter to Kiir which the president is said to have rejected.

"I just heard that he [Wani] had tendered his resignation as the vice president of the republic of South Sudan but the good thing is that our president did not accept. He rejected it and instead appointed him as the chairman of the crisis management committee", a senior official told Sudan Tribune on Monday.

South Sudan has been in a crisis since Kiir accused his former vice president Riek Machar of orchestrating a failed coup attempt last week.

It remains unclear as to what could have triggered speculation about the resignation of the vice president which began to dominate public discussion on social media platforms on Sunday.

Some attributed the rumours of the vice president’s resignation to claims that president Kiir was studying a proposal that would create a position of the second vice president, a proposal said to have made some Equatoria politicians unhappy.

Wani, who hails from South Sudan’s southern Equatoria region, stepped aside for Machar in 2002 when was reintegrated into the ruling SPLM after splitting from the movement in 1991 during the civil war with Khartoum.

"This time we will not accept Wani to become the second vice president. It will be better he resigns instead of becoming the second vice president. We don’t want it," said Moses Dukua, a native of Yei River county in Central Equatoria state.

"This was what the Arab used to do for Southerners when we were still part of Sudan. So the Dinka and Nuer want to do it again for us so that we become second class citizens in the country we all fought for it. I will personally not accept and will rather go to become a Ugandan citizen if some Equatorians accept [the proposal of a second vice president]", argued Duku

But President Kiir’s spokesman said there was no such proposal, adding that the rumour was propaganda meant to divide the people of South Sudan.

I have been saying all along that we must keep our spears sharpen because we are going to battle it out with Europeans, UNIMISS & US mercenaries. The corporate Europe & US wants a puppet that they will use to control our country. But that is not going to happen as we know it. Those mercenaries must first get rid of S Sudanese before the corporate Europe & US are allowed to control our country....

they can use their SUDANTRIBUNE propaganda bullshits to feed S Sudanese with lies, but we already know the devil behind these mess are our so-called US & Europe, but they will be bloody nosed badly. Their intrigues of creating division among African communities games work well else where in Africa, but it will not work in S Sudan. plain & simple.

There are two things which made Kirr and his Dinka circle to create the second VP position. Firstly, Kirr knows that Igg is a soft man and wouldn’t help. Secondly, Kirr knows very well that his time as the president of RSS is in limbo after when Dr. Rick survived the assassination attempts planned by him (Kirr). So he want to put a Dinka man or women as first VP to take it over when he gone.

It is true that James Wani Igga had submitted his resignation letter to incompetent Salva Kiir but due to his submissive n cowardice attitudes,he recant from stepping down. This is for two reasons:First, the ethnic cleaning waged against innocent Nuer civilians by Salva Kiir’s Guelweng militias.Second, the importation of Ugandan mercenaries without

Son of Bentui, We like Wani Igga in Equatoria. He is the best compared to all of u. He symbolises what Equatoria stands for, i.e, PEACE. Now we want all of u (Dinka and Nuer) out. Take ur wars to ur backyards. Talks to be held must include provision for a separate nation in Equatoria. It is a shame sharing this country with a filthy gang of killers who have no respect for human life and dignity.

Tutbol, you are very wrong. You got it all wrong brother. Ask your Gogrial kitchen president for failing to democratized the government of South Sudan. He is the one who should be blamed. Tell you president from gogrial that being a military leader is very different from being a politician.

If Wani wants to remain as true hero, he has to resign from this dirty game. Wani, you do not want be part of this dirty, bloody, game of conspiring to kill your fellow party members. Very good minded person knew what happened was not a planned coup as clamed. Mr. Kirr wanted to kill these fellows so he can remain as president of South Sudan for life. This is dirty and unacceptable.

If it is true that the v/p tried to resign, it is because the presidency is sitting in a bath tab full of blood of innocent children, women, and men massacred by Kiir’s security apparatus. That said, Wani has the right to dissociate and distance himself from this crime against humanity, in which if the full report is concluded is subject to referral to international criminal court of justice.

This magnitude of crime will not go unpunished. My advice to my brother Wani is, resign and stay clear of this criminal and tribalistic acts of Kiir’s security apparatus for history to put you honorably in your rightful place.

The debate that South Sudanese intellectuals should have is the question of forging a true democratic constitution by all South Sudanese civil society and not a president nominated appointees. Presidential term limits and federal system of govermment. Military coup was just a ploy to rally support to fight Machar and his supporters who have constitutional right to question wrongs GOSS has created
