Lakes state youth leader contests his removal from office

April 7, 2013 (RUMBEK) – The youth chairperson in South Sudan’s Lakes state, Apuk Deng Reech, has described as “fake” a letter seeking his removal from the position.

Member of Lakes State Youth Union (LASYU), on Saturday, passed a vote of no confidence against Apuk, at a meeting where 18 of them voted.

The union, in a letter signed by the speaker, Malith Ahol Chaak, accused their chairperson of undermining the youth executive council and allegedly worked independently without involving others in the union’s activities.

“A member of the [executive] council moved a motion for passing a vote of no confident in the chairperson, Mr. Apuk Deng Reech. A counter motion was raised by another member of the council for the warning/pardoning of the chairperson. The two motions were put to vote; 14 members voted to pass a vote of no confidence, while 3 members voted for the latter (serious warning/pardoning and one member abstained,” the letter reads in part.

The embattled chairperson has, however, denounced the union’s letter, arguing that such a contentious issue can only be resolved in court.

“This document was done by criminals, that document is fake. Those boys who wrote this letter are criminals and serious measures will be taken against them through the law,” Apuk told Sudan Tribune.

He said the members of the union should let the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports handle youth-related matters, warning that serious measures will be taken over the “fake” letter.

Apuk was elected chairperson of youth union in July last year, after he garnered 39% of the votes, defeating three other candidates.
