President Bashir and Aides are Accountable for Hundreds of Injured People

Urgent Appeal to Release Shama Adil and Incarcerated Demonstrators

In the midst of popular peaceful protests against the government austerity measures and unlawful repressive action by police and security forces these last few days in Sudanese universities, towns, and cities, president Omer Hassan al-Bashir announced unlawful threats to “grill” the demonstrations with tortures and suppression in gross violation of the Sudan Transitional Constitution and internationally-recognized norms.

The Organization condemns in the strongest terms possible the violent climate Bashir and his political and security aides established in the country by non-constitutional acts of civil war and chaotic violence against civic freedoms and human rights. Bashir and his government must learn to respect the human rights and civil freedoms of the People of Sudan, on a regular basis, by Constitutional Law.

Arbitrarily arrested in unknown detention, the Egyptian journalist Shima Adil has been a subject of tortures by the Sudanese national security and intelligence department which used maximum violence by batons, tear gas, and rubber bullets and injured scores of people without medical attention in gross violation of the law.

The case of journalist Adil is one of many other reported cases of arbitrary arrests and tortures following the public protests. Victims of rubber bullets included A. M., in Omdurman. Hundreds of other demonstrators, including female students F. M., A. E., H. H., and male students H. M., T. E., A. S., besides many members of the Umma and the Communist parties were severely injured by batons and tear gas, but denied medical attention in government hospitals or even private clinics.

* SHRO-Cairo asks the authorities to release immediately journalist Shama and the hundreds of citizens arbitrarily placed in prisons, police stations, or clandestine detention.

* The Sudan police, security forces, and health authorities are legally accountable with president Bashir and his political and security aides for the appalling conditions of all demonstrators who had been injured, and then denied medical attention against the law.

* The Sudan Government is required to respect the right of people to exercise full enjoyment of the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The government must provide full compensations to the injured parties by expeditious law-abiding procedure.
