JEM sacks head of its delegation to Doha process for peace in Darfur

September 25, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) dismissed the head of its delegation to the Doha peace process two months after the signing of a peace agreement between the government and another rebel group, Liberation and Equality Movement (LJM).

The rebel group accused Mohamed Bahr Ali Hamdein, deputy chairman and head of Kordofan sector, of preparing to signing a peace deal with the Sudanese government in Doha on 28 September

Mohamed Bahr was the of head JEM delegation to Doha in December 2010 as the group decided to resume its participation in the peace process after freezing it in May 2010. He was flanked by Ahmed Tugud as chief negotiator.

Direct negotiations between JEM and Sudanese government delegations were rare in Doha as the positions of the two parties were often at odds. On the other hand, Sudan and LJM rebels achieved important progress in their parallel talks.

In May 2011, the outcome of the government and LJM was endorsed by the stakeholders conference as Doha Darfur Peace Document (DDPD). However, JEM described the framework text as good basis for talks with the government and called for negotiations.

Khartoum accused JEM of not being interested in peace saying the rebel group had another political agenda (regime change) but not peace in Darfur. Ahmed Tugud was accused of being representing this hard-line in the Movement.

Mohamed Bahr was seen during the Doha talks as compromising and willing to ink the DDPD. To cut short any divisions within the rebel group; JEM leadership held a meeting in Doha to define a common position on the framework document.

However after a collegial decision to demand direct talks based on the DDPD, the deputy chairman refused to return to the ground and departed from Doha to Dubai where he remained.

Gibreel Adam Bilal said in a statement released on Sunday that JEM learnt through "reliable intelligence" that the deputy chairman was planning a coup against the leadership of the Movement .

He further said that Mohamed Bahr is preparing to hold a press conference next Wednesday to announce his breakaway group and the signing of DDPD.

The Sudanese government gave the rebel group three months, starting from the signing of a peace agreement with LJM on 14 July, to join the Doha peace document.

The US special envoy to Sudan Princeton Lyman called on Khartoum to not close the door of negotiations with the JEM and the two factions of Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Al-Nur and Minni Minnawi.

welcom done Jem,there is no shortcut to achieve peace and freedom in any society or country in world.
signing undigested and uncook peace agreement is not the right way to bring peace to the entire community of sudan.

    Bravo Dr Khalil
That is a right move. Your guy wants to defect so as to sign his own agreement that only meets his personal interest not that of the Darfuri people. Make sure you tighten the noose on the his neck in the movement and sends him no further for other negotiations.
