Sudan army claims new gains near rebel stronghold in Blue Nile state

October 20, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) on Thursday said it managed to take over a town close to the rebel stronghold in the Blue Nile state which borders Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The state was the scene of fighting two months ago between SAF and forces from the Sudan People Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N), led by then-governor Malik Agar, who was later sacked by president Omer Hassan al-Bashir under his constitutional powers to impose emergency laws.

Agar accused SAF of firing on his convoy and thus triggering the fighting between the two sides. The SPLM-N was flushed out of most of the state in the fighting that ensued and is now believed to be confined to the town of Al-Kurmuk ever since.

SAF spokesperson Al-Sawarmi Khalid Sa’ad was quoted by Sudan official news agency (SUNA) as saying that they have driven out SPLM-N forces from the town of Sali which lies 9 kilometers north of Al-Kurmuk.

Sa’ad said that the 12-hour battle took place on Wednesday and lasted till early hours of Thursday adding that SPLM-N used all its tanks and artillery to defend its camp in the area.

But a SPLM-N spokesman told Reuters that fighting was still going on there, saying “SPLA forces have not been driven away from the area.”

It is ridiculous, for Sudan army to keep fighting while talking which shows that they are really growing weaker and weaker. If really that they are stronger, then they would not keep making noise. Those are the characteristics of cowardices.

Look at the humiliation we are getting as a country by associating the name of our national army with the Garang’s weak and underequipped militia called SPLA. Three defeats in a row!! what happened to that ridicules militia? Where is the 40% of the GoSS budget Mariaal Benjamin used to deceive Southern Sudanese to have been given to army in order to improve the security in RoSS!

NCP and SPLM must not waste Sudanese lives and resources fighting their nonsense wars!! You battled one another for 21 years without any clear winner until you were rescued by the CPA!! Your ridicules differences resulted into enormous loss of innocent lives and the division of what used to be the largest country in our black continent, into two weak countries. What else do you want?
