June 21, 2011 (BENTIU) – Militarily intelligence officers from North Sudan’s army (SAF) arrested six southern Sudanese at Heglig oil field on Monday according to a spokesperson for Unity State in South Sudan.

Heglig, situated in South Kordofan, is Sudan’s biggest known oil field and will remain in the North Sudan after South Sudan secedes 9 July. The South will take with it around 75 percent of Sudan’s oil wealth.

Unity State’s minister of information and communication Gideon Gatpan Thoar told Sudan Tribune on Tuesday that the six men were being detained at an undisclosed location in solitary confinement.

Thoar added that three cars belong to the Unity State government are seized and right now being used by SAF in area.

Two of the arrested were officials form Concord International; James Matut a field extension officer and James Ayual technician officer. The other four were Unity State officials; Stephen John Chuol from the state’s ministry of health;
Ramadan Kuol Machar a driver for the state ministry of public service; Kuol Gadein driver for the State Legislative Assembly and Adam Ahmed Madibo driver the state ministry of finance.

Thoar said, since the arrest yesterday their families and relatives have been denied visitation and all forms of communication. He claimed they had been mistreated and tortured.

The minister also said they were suffering from life threatening diseases and are currently without medication. He said their detention was unlawful and an abuse of their human rights.

He said the Unity State government the Sudan Armed Forces and Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party solely responsible for the lives and safety of the arrested citizens and called for their immediate release.

    Belli loboi,

    Heglig is a southern territory of Unity state. Don’t be cheated by that useless map drawn by the north without the endorsement from the government of southern sudan. You know much about the north like I do. These thugs are always after our resources; it is simply because Heglig is a oil rich area and therefore they annex it to the North on paper. In light of this, 1956 north-south border claims several kilometres beyond Heglig for you to believe.

    Thanks bro.

    THESE ARE NOT NGO STAFF. They are officials of South sudan government and should not be there. Concord is not an NGO. Trust me you wont see any UN security council meeting over this or protest from anyone but the Unity governor – who we all know is supporting the rebellion in South kordufan and they were probably spies.

    Hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!I just sit back laughing at stupid people who take side foolishly without having to analyse the conversation.
    Why you think NGO should employ foreign staff thinking they are expatise living out the citizens of the country?
    Bashir should sue them and deport them to their countries of orgin.
