North Sudan’s defense minister threatens South with military intervention

April 20, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – North Sudan’s Defense Minister Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein has threatened to take military action against South Sudan in order to stop its alleged support to rebels from the western region of Darfur.

In a televised interview with the Sudanese Blue Nile satellite channel on Monday, Lit-Gen Staff Hussein said that the north was still keen on peace, adding that this was evidenced by the north’s acceptance to let the south secede.

However, the veteran figure at the northern government threatened that military intervention in the south remains "a secondary option" if the region’s government does not stop what he alleged was its support to Darfur rebel groups.

"Take your hands off Darfur and expel the rebels," Hussein warned the south.

Sudan’s President Al-Bashir on Tuesday echoed claims that the south was providing support to Darfur rebels, urging the region’s government to refrain from such action, as reported by the country’s official news agency SUNA.

Al-Bashir also warned, in an interview published on Wednesday by the Guardian that south Sudan could become a failed state if issues of divisions and corruption are not quickly addressed.

Similarly, South Sudan has been accusing the northern government of supporting militias and defected army generals in its territories with the intent of destabilizing the region ahead of the declaration of its independence in July.

Last month South Sudan government produced documents showing orders being given by the northern army for the supply of arms to armed groups in the south, but the north alleged that the documents are forged.

North Sudanese officials have routinely accused the south of supporting and giving sanctuary to Darfur rebels, pointing to the presence in the region of Minni Arkoi Minnawi, the leader of a former Darfur rebel faction who defected from the government after he signed a peace deal with Khartoum in 2006.

The conflict in Sudan’s western region of Darfur erupted eight years ago when rebel groups belonging mostly to African ethnicities took up arms against the central government, accusing it of marginalizing the region. According to UN figures, 300,000 people died and 2.7 millions lost their homes as a result of the conflict.

Hussein iterated claims that the troubles in Darfur region were exaggerated by the West in order to give a negative impression about the situation there.

"The problem is that the Western nations are the ones who insist there is a problem," he said.

Separately, the country’s top military official said that Sudan’s shared borders with Libya, which has been fractured by an armed rebellion against the rule of its leader Muammar Qaddafi, were being closely monitored in order to prevent leakage of weapons into Sudan. “We can control the deserts to a large extent," he said.

The minister also claimed the existence of cooperation between the Libyan authorities and Darfur rebel group the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), whose leader Khalil Ibrahim fled to Libya after his erstwhile allies in Chad refused to allow him entry to the country following a thaw in previously-strained ties with Sudan.

According to Hussein, the revolutionaries in Libya found a JEM camp in Al-Kafrah.

In response to calls for his resignation against the background of an Israeli airstrike which incinerated a car in eastern Sudan earlier this month and killed two people, the minister said he was confident that he was doing his job properly.

He revealed that military reinforcements in Port Sudan and Sawakin, two towns in eastern Sudan, were being increased and that a review of military measures in the region was underway.

It was reported earlier this week that the Sudanese authorities had arrested an unknown number of people on charges of spying for Israel and providing information that facilitated the airstrike.

SMOKE OVER KHARTOUM!! LOL!! The SPLA cant do anything against the North. If the SPLA tries anything they will get crushed and dominated like always. Remember when the CPA was signed even Juba was under the control of the north. We’ll just send some fighter jets to bomb Silva Kirr’s tin box he calls his office, your drunken soldiers are already taking care of the rest, fighting and killing each other off.

Darfur doesn’t need anybody’s help; they’re capable of defending themselves and their homeland.
The notion that somehow South Sudan is helping the rebels in Darfur is just not true.

South is not well enough to be helping others.
If the north has its own problem, they should deal with it without any excuses.

Before speaking the language of threat, intimidation and braveness you should first look at the cause of the problem!

The fact that SPLM/A offers a safe haven and harboring the Darfourian rebel until this moment and provides them with all kind of logestic, indirect and direct support and this consider to be an act of aggression and unacceptable from a neighbor country!

Until this moment we did not harbor any southern rebel leader and all of them exist inside the south and launch their attack against SPLA from there.

I totally disagree with our defense minister of SAF intervention in the south, we don’t need to do that because the rebel in south are growing very fast and their numbers are increasing and it is just a matter of time till Goss and SPLM regime completely collapse!

South should learn the lesson from our neighbors countries, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda and finally Chad, all these countries tried their best to topple Khartoum regime before and tried what ever they could but they all discovered the fact that they are hitting their heads against a big concrete wall that cannot be moved or demolished and came back empty handed and returned very good neighbors and friends at the end of the day and they continue to do so!

My advise to you our neighbors, don’t mess with Sudan, it is big country and has many resources and unbeatable army, you can win a battle but never the war against SAF!

I think it’s time for removing corrupted GoSS government and SPLA from power, we have many things in our hand that we can use against GoSS including cutting economy ties with the south, stop exporting the south share oil, stop the food ships from Kosti port from going south and all that will be inconjuction with powerfull attack from the rebel in south against SPLA and soon we can see new government in the south that serves south interst in the first place and has very close relation with north!

    Yes, it is doable!

      Jalaby the illusionist.

If you think you are that mighty how come JEM gives you a lot of headache here and there, even to the extent of entering Omdurman.
Had it not been the help of JIU (SPLA inclusive)where would you have been by now?
Secondly why rush to threaten South Sudan instead of dealing with the rebels directly?
Since when has Darfur region become part of South Sudan?

Your rebels are in Darfur and not in South Sudan Period!

Jalaby, Mohamed Ali & those fugitives beating the drum of war in Khartoum. Please control your airspace first then think of war with south. It is only Sudan that foreign airplane bombs in its territory and the government even does not know. You are touching wrong end. South Sudan planes will enter your airspace you will even not know. Darfur rebels alone entered Omdurman you even don not know and you think of threating south Sudan. This time if war breaks you will cross red sea only with "sorwal" as you entered Sudan - it will be mother of all wars which will involve Darfur, south Sudan, Nuba mountains and blue Nile, you will look for a place to hide yourselves better solve your problem with out touching south. South Sudan has demonstrated to all world how strong it is that is why it has separated and as Dr Garang has said Sudan will never be again the same. Let Khartoum better seek a good neighborhood with south. We know all militia leaders are in Khartoum what are you talking about?

Arabized Shimaleen (Jalaby, Shadowmaster and Mo Ali)

You guys need to get a grip on reality, Sudan is still one country until July 9th, so if Mini Minawi wants to stay in a Juba hotel, so what! If Darfuri rebells who use to fight your dirty war in the past and have woken up to your trickery want to roam the south, so what! You have no platform to argue from until July 9th.

No need to mention the numerous individuals residing in Khartoum and declaring war against GoSS, you know who they are.

Your threats are empty and meaningless to most southerners and other African Sudanese (real Sudanese) as they have suffered for decades under your ruthless divide and conquer rule and have survived. So stop crying like little boys and if you are real men? deal with the lethal strikes in the sovereign airspace of Sudan. But you can’t, because your bark has always been louder than your bite, shouting all day about Israel but cant do shit. FOOLS! Even Egypt continues to occupy Halaib triangle but your behind the scene drunken and boy fondling (pedophiles) leaders are busy looting while making threats to occupy the minds of the simpletons like the mentioned above shimaleen bigots.

SAF are a bunch of pussycats, damn you guys are funny though!

    Defense minister,
I think, what you are doing is absolutely negative accusation. In a simple logic, we all know that your government have been working earnestly to ensure the destablization of the South is successful. This has been negotiated for a long time and yet the destablization is increasing in the geographical boundaries of the South.

Darfur Issue remained as a threat to Khartoum government in both militarily and legally since it has led to indictment of Omer Bashir by International Criminal Court. you must understand that the little percentage of oil money you are giving to the South can not fuel war in Darfur and cater for Southern Sudan exepenses.
We always need to be realistic when talking about national issues.

Mr Abdul You make me over laugh your stupid idea. SPLA is not like before it has equipped itself with weapons of mass destruction (WMD). World wide recognized warriors with the same interest of liberating Southern Sudanese. The reason you spent some years fighting with us is that, you use our stupid Southerners to fight against their fellow Southerners, if it wasn’t that, then we would have chased you from Sudan long time ago.you are counting on saying called "set a thief to catch a thief" like what you have done again, you hired Peter Gadet to fight against his own government. It is clear. Khartoum will lose 75% of its budgets, and yet on the media, the claim that South used to be burden on the North.

The lack of knowledge by most people in the world to identify with one another has led to un-enjoyed years of life by most people especially in the Arab world. most often they are under supervision and threats follow them wherever they go and chaos has therefore become part of life in most Arab communities.

Why then should you as a "mere human being" a Muslim or Christian, pagan, among others created in God’s not Allah’s image always like such life on earth?

No wonder that one can still praise himself for failure to achieve a long stated objective (Arabization and Islamization)such as that which the Arabs had done up to this time.

It is just a shame on war mongers because everywhere in the world war has been disapproved as the most rudimentary tool to attain success even by Americans and Israelis; not Iraq and the little Sudan in the hands of Muslim orphans from now where in the world are capable of any success through war.

America and Russia had to had to stop war fronts in order for them to reach this level. It was only George W. Bush who succeeded in Iraq by hanging Sadam Hussien but with little benefits to his own country.

This time South Sudan might be another country with different people. Never assume success over it until you finalize.
