Majok Jok-rir, the leader of Bor wrestlers that represent Jonglei state, defeated Maker Nyirou from Aliap of Lakes state.

Lakes state won the next match before Mayen Reech from Jonglei beat Awuou-dhol from Lakes state, tilted the game to ‘Referendum Stars’, as Bor county wrestlers are locally known only to balanced in the game. But despite the early lead the game ended in a draw.

Traditional wrestling, which used to be practiced just in cattle camps practice between young men has begun to be professionalized in south Sudan in the last few months. On October 30 Bor county beat Twic East county in Jonglei state in a match in Juba. The game is common in Southern Sudan tribes including the Dinka and Mundari.

Both keep cattle and it the game used to be between youth in cattle camps mainly for fame and pride. But the organizers of the recent matches, the Southern Sudan Wrestling Entertainment (SSWE), a private body, are awarding wrestlers with up to 1,000 Sudanese Pounds in prize money.

The result of Saturday’s game means that Lakes state is knocked out of the competition. Jonglei state’s team, who have not lost since the tournament began, will now face Central Equatoria state wrestlers on December 18.

Jonglei defeated Central Equatoria by 6-5 earlier in the competition, whereas Lakes state lost 6-1 to the same opposition.

Supporters at Juba stadium, danced, sang songs and clapped during the event.

The wrestlers entertained the crowd by raising their arms to imitate bull horns. Other wrestlers jumped up and down as fans cheered them stadium.

As the south’s referendum on independence approaches, the traditional games also serve as an arena for discussion on the January 2011 exercise, where southerners will decide either to form their own country in accordance to 2005 peace accord.

It’s encouraging that lake state’s contestants have contains the "referendum star" of Jonglei state at this time, and that only is great.Otherwise, things could have been worse for you guys if they were defeated again. Therefore,it’s unwise for you to challenge anyone or anybody who strongly believes that, the " referendum star" will inevitably wins the contest between the two team since this is what had happen then.Because, winning outrightly on the field or being awarded unanimously by points doesn,t make any difference at all, since that’s how the sport,s rules work. Moreover,I thinks, it would be nice for any of us to accepts the fact that,in every game there are losers and winners and in this case BOR or Jonglei’s referendum star are undeniably, the clear winners of the day and maybe tommorrow any of they team will be crowns the winner.Otherwise,thanks.

      Bravo Lakers!

That is a very great and rapid shift. You deserve to be the members of traditional wrestlers in Southern Sudan.

I can imagine that you didn’t properly prepare for the match for the first time you joined the event and it was the reason of defeat. I would like to hear that you have thoroughly beaten both Guys from Central equatoria (Mundari) and those from Jonglei (Bor) in the next tournment whether this year or next year.

Thank you very much for the achievement.

I also appreciate the body that initially forms this peaceful practice of tradition. It enhances good relationship and refreshes traditional norms and culture as well as fame.
      Keep it alive forever!

      Dear all

I really love to see our people gaming with love and happiness. this will shift people mentality toward doing good for our country. The next final game i want to see Central Equato- to be the Champ. Jonglei should not dream for the champ.

It is good to have inter-clanal and inter-tribal competition of this nature. It fosters unity and renders culture enjoyable when it is well organized and issues like hooliganism are controlled among rival fans.
Secondly, It is an avenue for young well mannered men to meet those beautiful chics that grow up in fences with little interaction with youths apart from their schoolmates and neighbors. Such getherings are avenues for young men to meet their future wives. Of course young men don’t go there to look for girls with intention to spoil them otherwise they will end up in jail like those guys already languishing in Lakes State jail for impregnating girls with no intention to marry them.
So, young men, attend those getherings, you might be surprised to meet the girl you had been waiting for and a move to learn about a girl and family background can easily be initiated.

That is exactly what Dinkas do always. During 21 years of war with northerns,Dink was dancing, playing chese under trees, living in refugees camps and finlly they are beating druma of warors,

Now,other comunities are at the borders and think night and day of how people are going to solve the problem with northerns, while our brothers Dinkas are busy wrestling to each other, drinking and dancing again like before 21 years a go. Southern should be aware of Dinkas stlyes. This priod is not the tim to Wrestling to each other or celberations.
Let us get the job done first then celberate.

Shame shame shame on you Bor...........

Thanks anyway ,SPLA cannot survive wothout those guys ,when you go back to the history when everyone used to say " Akuma bita Dinka " but now thing have changed not like before and when you look at those who have bad heart toward Dinkas ,these are those who were connected to the NCP ,they joined the NCP and come back and fight with SPLA and SPLA accomodate them ,howeever never used that term the socalled referundom stars .go back and read about how the Moment was borned ,i dont say everyone was not involved in the struggle but they joined later when they saw their brothers paving for them way .so brother you are one of the liberators and don’t talk about what you don’t know !!! infact that name fit to those guys to becalled referendum stars in many aspect not only in wrestling .

Wrestling is aproved at national level of GOSS in capital city of Juba that never happen before? Before I congratulate who is gonna be winner. First you want to vote for separation to make this appen in future, if you give chance to unity there will be no wrestling because Arab government will not allow sush a thing as it not been appened before otherwise it would have go back to cattle camps in stead of city.

Hey guy, Referendum star refers to that strong Dinka Bor team of wrestlers that initiated this activity with their brothers in Twic East. It is a name for a team like in a football play, a team decide good memorable and meaninful name to be called after e.g. Desertfox, Elephant, Blackstar, Super Eagle, Harambee, etc. These names are good memorable and meaningful to those countries with those teams. Therefore, please brother, never be jealous for the name chosen by the organized and vissionary Referendum Star team. They did not choose that name to depict what they represent without knowing the meaning behind it. They are there to build peace between Mundari and the Dinka Bor, Aliap and Atuor to ensure peaceful co-existence among these communities and beyond is restored after it was spoiled by greedy politicians and military leaders during war time.
Therefore, Referendum Star is there for a national duty and you should support their efforts morally and financially.

      Rgds, Nhomlawda
