Athor says coordinating with other renegade Southern Sudan generals

May 31, 2010 (JUBA) — A renegade general renewed his criticisms to the government of Southern Sudan for its management of the electoral process last April, stressing that other generals discontented from the elections have joint him.

George Athor Deng delivers first campiagns speech in Bor on March 1, 2010 (ST)Forces loyal to ex-SPLA general and former candidate for Jonglei Governor, George Athor Deng, attacked SPLA barracks in Doliep Hill, Jonglei, last April. The United Nations attempted to broker a deal to end his row with Juba over elections results but Southern Sudan government declined the offer because of the difficult conditions he had posed.

Since, his troops clashed with the southern Sudan several times and the semi autonomous region witnessed similar incidents in Unity and Upper Nile States, months ahead of a crucial referendum on self- determination.

"I have many people who joined me, one of them is Colonel Galwak Gai and the other is David Yauyau, and we have others in other areas," said the former SPLA deputy chief of General Staff Lieutenant General George Athor Deng in an interview with Reuters on Monday.

Athor was referring to General Gatluak Gai of SPLA, who had been angered by the alleged elections rigging by the incumbent governor, Taban Deng Gai, in Unity state, and David Yauyau of Pibor, who also voiced his rebellion on the "rigging" of the elections.

Yauyau, from his part, confirmed to Reuters he was coordinating with General Athor.

Speaking to Sudan Tribune yesterday from Khartoum, SPLM former candidate for the Presidential elections, Yasir Arman, accused the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) military intelligence and security services of supporting the rebelled generals in the South saying they implement plans to destabilize the southern region.

"We have very accurate intelligence about continued efforts by the military intelligence and security services to undermine stability in southern Sudan," he said. "These schemes threaten the whole peace agreement," he added.

He further disclosed that they had discussed the issue with the National Congress Party. "This operation is designed to evade the referendum through igniting internal wars in the south," he stressed.

However the Sudanese army rejected the accusations saying the renegade generals do not need to SAF weapons to rebel.

The SAF "do not need to arm militias in the south at this time," said Alsoarmi Khaled Saad the official spokesperson of the Sudanese army in statements he made to Al-Aayam newspaper.

He pointed out that the UN was monitoring arms movement in the areas of ceasefire.

He further challenged the southern Sudanese army (SPLA) to reveal the names of individuals allegedly supported by the Sudanese army (SAF) and the amounts of money the army paid.

The Southern Sudan will conduct a referendum on self-determination next January on whether to remain within the current Sudan or to declare an independent state. The ruling National Congress Party says it would work to convince southerners to vote for unity while many SPLM leaders call openly for separation.

In Khartoum, the First Vice President and President of Southern Sudan Government Salva Kiir Mayadrit on Monday met with southern Sudanese figures members of the National Congress Party and former militia leaders who integrated to the Sudanese army.

Riek Gai, leading NCP member and former presidential adviser, said the meeting aimed to create a conciliatory spirit among the people of southern Sudan in this very sensitive period ahead of the referendum.

The delegation included Gen. El-Tom Al-Nur Daldoom, Gen Gabriel Dank, Gen. Thomas Abor, Gen. Gordon Dom Chol, Gen. John Doerr, Gen. Brigadier Gai James Gai and Gen. Brigadier Tor Gayn.

Assassination of your top leaders will follow from all this fake untiy. Businesses will be vandalized. Insecurity will be everywhere including Khartoum. SPLM needs to deal with Athor’s problem right now. If it is not going to do so, chances are Athor may disrupt referendum pollings in January next year. Should he do that, referendum may be lost for good.

The rainny season will greatly make it worse ever as you my friend have said it right. The brave guys now are in all the corners of South.

I ask George Athor and Galuak Gai not to deal with everybody, but to deal with the hyenas, riggers.

Brother Gartwech. southern Sudan doesn’t need any effort to spend with General Athor dialogue, i am sure Athor and plus will regret too much when the government of south is taking it seriously, it must be in every one information that the government of south Sudan is testing the hearts of people who are mentally weak then they will be facing consequences soon not far before referendum instead to go with them to the promise date.

I am very confident that our government will extend its long arm soon and crash those weak hearts, and up regretfully no doubt in that believe me or not George Athor will regret too much or my be he have regretted already, but doesn’t have any option to come back to government, as he got crazy when he received little money after long he didn’t see the money and he thought he became powerful, but he was totally wrong and wrong til the day of his death, Athor will regret the day of his birth.
Long live South Sudan, long live our referendum in 2011.

Never repeat again that Goss must crash those generals, they not Athor alone now, they are group of generals with NCP pushing them to destroy the peace, don’t tell us shallow words, peace must take place before the end of June.

Reading the military mentality is an intellectual task, and it’s so complicated to the ordinary citizens to comprehend and analysis, even for the political experise to read whats between the lines. Rebellion against the authorities around the world, has been considered as a legitimate way of revolutional struggle for fredom and democracy, protected by the might of their elites in the armed forces,as in Sudan April 1985. It has been a fundamental principle of liberation movements around the world, that whatever taken by force should be returned by force. As the situation in Jongle State getting worse from bad every passing day,the local communities who caught in the middle, considering those rebellion generals are their vocaling tool of their grudging and disappointment of SPLM/A conduct. The history showed us that, all the rebellions against the authorities, never thrived without the local citizens’ support,so any military attempts against it will result in a huge loss of civilian lives. Hence Gen; Athor took upon himself the responsiblity of expressing the refusal of Jongle State’s mases of the outcome of the elections,as been rigged by SPLM/A security apparatus,he gained the legitimacy of his rebellion conduct; militarilly.

SPLM/A has played its stand contra these rebelion negatively, and considered by these supportive communities, where the rebelion took place,as aknowledgement to the commited crime, stealing the will and votes of the electorals. Thus SPLM/A became the enemy of the freedom ambitioned ordinary citizens. It has to be encountered by all availble meansAs a matter of fact, the current SPLM/A is not reflecting the interests and hopes of the people of SouthSudan.

The masses rushed to the streets of Khartoum to wellcome Dr; John Garang as a liberator and a messiah of the powerless margnalized Sudanese .But his inheritors procreate the Old-Sudan way of governance, and engulfed themselves in a rampant corrupt and betrayal of the same people that supported them for two daceds of the liberation struggle.

Those who thinks that, the most important issue right now is the referundom, and we have to put aside our differences, that insparked by SPLM/A highjacking the the SouthernSudanese votes. So, if there is no military uprisal?!How those ordinary citizens, who have been disarmed, can encounter the dictatorial SPLM/A’ might ?! if not the zealous ex-commanders of the Liberation Movement assumed the task ???

SouthSudan was fighting with itself to launch fair, free and transparent democratic atmosphere, but SPLM/A denied to implement that demand, but resorted to the use of the utmost power against its people, thus aborted the democratic political change that stated by the CPA.

Freedom fighters can’t sit idle and let SPLM/A eliminate our freedom and political existence, for the sake of the referenda. The liberation and freedom price paid by us and our fallen heros,is binding us to quell the enemies of our Movement, the sham SPLM of GOSS....So please be honest and sincere in your comments and analysis of the current political situation,Sudan wide...

Such kind of mistake which were been committed by those people do happen every where in any government and there should be away of handling them. Don’t be surprise of any mistake my dear all these grievances can confront any leader and they can be settled administratively and one cann’t put himself in worry about all these simple problems. we hope Salva Kiir knows how to handle them in his capacity as president of the South. George Athor Deng, Colonel Gatluak Deng and Yauyau cannot be solely blame for taking law in to their own hands. Lack of political maturity combine with personal greediness push people off the political limits.

Majority of peace loving south sudanese are not happy with what SPLM had done in the last election. The point is, even if the election was rigged as others have claimed this will not justify arm uprising in the south. The individuals who had taken up arms due to the last election are being driven by their own political and material greediness.

It is becoming clear SPLM is showing lack of leadership in dealing with the political mess it had created in the last election and start blaming external forces. This lack of leadership will encourage more materials driven politicians to join their likes. Decisive action is urgently needed to deal with this unfolding situations in the south.

I have just agreed with one of commentators who said let`s get separated from our common enemy, oppressors and killers of our parent therafter we will correct ourselves internally.Absolutely Athor had spoiled his image in the face southerners whom he had liberated by liasing with those of Tom alnur who were bought by common enemy to distabilise his own fellow brothers in the south for the sake of money.I can recall that he was a liberty fighter then no need of him to takes arm against those whom he fought for to liberate.

Moreso, I would like to appeal to all southerners that do not give the room to the arab proverb which said the stone should be crashed with othr stone. They had been utlising illiterate southerners as tools for destructing the south since independency. However,to spell out that we are not like those previous southerners, we must know how to deal with oppressors at all levels. If one won the leadership today, another one may wait for tommorow patiently without evade the snags to remainants of wars, specially southerners because we can not become governor at the sametime. For those who can disearn even God can see south sudan is not like before to be honest.

Tell me when will you open your mind and eyes to start criticizing your own army/government? You jump up to troposhere wheneven some one points out the wrong deeds of our government and army. You think those who criticize were/are not part of this government? You think those who criticize were/are not heroes/heroine like you? We all fought for this freedom and we know what we wanted to achieve, democratic governance. To me it does not make sense to insult any one who try to positively or negatively criticize the government b/c this can make the the later improve in performance.

Another thing is that Gajaak community was not trying to cover up the late Samuel Gai when SPLA started to kill them a massive manner. However, they were protesting against SPLA for forcefully robbing their properties like cattles and grains.

In here you acting like you don’t give respect to Samuel Gai who is still a father of this ongoing liberation struggle, ah?

Man sit back and relax so that you be able to filter ideas and thoughts.
I know you will end up the most bitter enemy of your government some days if you are not a dictator like them. I mean when you lately start to realize the wrong doings of it. My advice to some of our brothers who always support those who want to cause the instability in Southern Sudan is, please stop this madness. It won’t do you or your people any good. Are you really Southern Sudanese and if so, do you still have living relatives or friends in the South? Do you care about them and their well being? What will you gain when those people you support to cause this instability in the South go in rampage killing innocent people some of which may be your relatives or friends? Would that make you happy?

People like uncle Athor should understand that becoming a leader is not everything in life. If his aim of standing for election was to serve people of his state, why put their lives in danger? Is this just because he thinks the election was rig? Uncle Athor should rethink what he is doing and find a civic way of solving problems. There is always tomorrow and there will be another election and if people truly want him to represent them, then they will vote him in next time.
