SPLM SG says party presidential candidates to be declared in few days

By James Gatdet Dak

January 12, 2010 (JUBA) – The Secretary General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Pagan Amum Okiech, said his party would declare its candidates in the next few day for all constituencies and positions the party wants to contest across the country.

Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) secretary general Pagan Amum (R) and Nafie Ali Nafie, presidential advisor and member of the northern ruling National Congress Party, address a news conference in the capital Khartoum December 13, 2009 (Reuters)

Amum said this will include the candidates for presidency in both national and Southern Sudan seats “if the party decides to contest” for such positions.

He called on the people of Southern Sudan in general and the SPLM members in particular to respect the final decision of the Political Bureau and maintain unity in the region.

The party’s Political Bureau is expected to meet on Wednesday and Thursday and declare the party’s candidates in the next few days.

SPLM is the only major political party in the Government of National Unity that has not yet declared its presidential candidates for the post-war elections.

NCP has declared the incumbent President Al-Bashir as its candidate for the April 2010 elections.

Some of the other political parties that allied with the SPLM during the Juba Conference last year, such as Popular Congress Party and UMMA Reform Party have declared their respective presidential candidates.

Another major opposition party, UMMA, of Sadiq Al-Mahdi is yet to declare its candidature.

The National Elections Commission (NEC) has given until January 22 dateline for all political parties to submit the names of their candidates to the Commission for approval or rejection.

This SPLM selection system will be the source of political squabbles throughout the region. Everything is poorly organized to invite chaos and violence. The 25 state electoral college is an un-elected body. Political Bureau is an un-elected body. This is not good for democracy, even for the so-called SPLM rudimentary democracy.

It would be nice to let the candidates go head to head in party primaries and win their nomination democratically. Very simple!! The very people in Political Bureau will be selecting themselves at the end of the day. What a democracy!!

This is the problem with south sudanese. They want to transform the system in the North to democratic system, while they also want to act and behave like northerners in the south. How can the south change for better if all they do is photocopying the system in the north?

Al-Bashir was president-elected before he signed CPA with SPLM in sudan. However, people may dispute if that election was free & fair. But people in opposition parties like AL-Sadik Al-Mahdi put up in Bashir’s sudan as its president till the CPA. Now that it is election time, his party-NCP deliverated and agreed that Bashir is electable based on his popularity. They probably predicted his popularity based on the past election that he won before CPA. Therefore, SPLM should not just photocopy from how NCP selected their candidates. SPLM supposed to be party of change. Their slogan is the so-called new sudan, right?

Kiir was fast-paced(selected) into his position through Garang’s Helicopter incidence. Thinking of it, SPLM never conduct an election. So, they are better to check their candidate’s electability or popularity through party primaries. Commonsense and wisdom dictates this. Trust me, the way they are doing this now has no integrated approach. And would easily lead into choas and violence.

Don’t forget SPLM as a party is only 5 years political system-minus all bush years. It needs more political wisdom and maturity. What is happening now is the gray area. Anything could happen!!

Theiling! I think I like the way you put across your argument, we need people like you on this web to encourage positivity in commending on this web. Our southern Sudanese are fond of assumptions and taking after what has already been plan by some body and that is bad for our political future. Given that we are vulnerable to voilent, we need witful panning and execution of matters so we can by all means avoid voilent. we have to forsake voilent or we will be behind in everythink. we have to take a chance at this time that we are the focus of international community as a conflict strickened country.
May be something elses might come up. we are running against time and human evolution to the new era of technology and natural catastrops. we got to be witful enough to catch up with careful steps.
Thank you Theiling and keep being positive, leave alone those of Dinka boy, kim, Gatwech and logic boy for they are doomed always in their minds. They never come up with something positive about our people, they are always tribalist and is a gone century mentality.

      You are 100% right Kim,
imagine what happened in Lakes state electoral college.
The semi illiterate Chairman called man kuc just rigged the nomination in some few hours. yesterday another crap and Ugly monkey like, called mabor Kau another guy that was bribed talking rubbish that the selection creteria is based on what you have done/achieved in the movement.if that is the case, how can deserters and late comers to the movement scored highly, this is laughable.
The Ugly Mabor mentioned that Paul Mayom Akec and William Ater drew, it was the semi illiterate chairman’s vote that remain to be cast, when he casted his vote, it altered all the 24 members votes by bringing the last person (Deserter or Nyagat by Name Magok Manyol) that got 3 votes out of 25 to be in the reserve list while the one of those who drew takes the third position votes. this is amazing and shameful to State SPLM Secretary Mathing Ker, who is suffering from Ma’ngurek in my dialect or (what shall i do, in direct translation) (that is cronic wound that does not heal no matter what. that is cancer of cours)
I would like you guys to take bribes and do the right things than confusing the whole state by the filthy mouth of yours that do not know boundries of where and what to eat from whom.
SPLM in Lake State is in a complete failure coming the April General election.

    Mr. Pagan Amum,

The SPLM should ally with the NCP and confirm Al-Bashir as their joint candidate for national presidency.

Salva Kiir should maintain his position as First Vice President in the national government.

The SPLM should nominate Dr. Riek Machar as the candidate for South Sudan presidency.

This will guarantee peaceful and continued implementation of the CPA by the partners (NCP and SPLM).

This will be a very wise decision that will consolidate peace and allow the two parties to implement the agreement until referendum and post-referendum period.

Political Bureau members should stop resorting to trivial conspiracies against comrades which is self-inflicting on the SPLM...

Just a correction, you proposed that Salva Kiir should maintain his position for First Vice President of Sudan and Riek Machar should be nominated the Candidate for President of GOSS. Don’t you know that the President of GoSS is also the first vice President of Sudan. There is no canditate for the postion of First Vice President. This means that any Candidate who will be successful for the President of GoSS will definitely be the First Vice President of SUDAN.

And don’t forget that laws are being amended in the process now including the National Constitutions or the Elections Act to accomodate for more seats as the situation dictates. Salva Kiir can be accomodated as an appointed First Vice President, but the two Presidents for Sudan and South Sudan are to be elected. Do you understand now???

Form a nuer party made up of traitors and lose elections. Beg SPLM to be given a ministry to run: he will get the ministry of nuer civilization (if there is any). We will be whistling for a well-executed plan.

    Dear Southerners, Happy new year.
I am too much worried about what is happenig now in our country South Sudan why because we have forgotten where we came from during the war. What we plan is to satify our needs in term of money, positions, land, cows etc but one day one time when Arabs find small chance, these properties we are greedy for will remain for them and we shall all be in trouble seeking slum somewhere i can`t imagine disgard of our tribes clans and educational level we have. Our government is getting tire of us better we correct ourselves so as to develop this nation (SS) with unified ideas rather then creating problems amongst our people. Lets comments as mature people and know our aims.
I know what is fighting with us the Southerners it money, but money can`t finish lets cooperate to build our country with confidentiality and compatriotism.

NCP doesn`t want the election to suceed as we are all aware that Bashir is needed by ICC incase they arrest that will surely lead to war.
And it is likewise bad for him to be candidates since he used his powers to killed a number of innocents in Sudan where there are currently the disables, widows and orphans. So, is he ready to lead who and they are the same voters if he fell to be elected then he must fight. To conclude, lets not laugh and sleep we are still with big problem and if we fell to work hard together we shall automatically get the feedback.
