October 18, 2009 (JUBA) – The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has begun airlifting hundreds of guards of General Paulino Matip to the Southern Sudan capital, Juba, from Bentiu, the state capital of the oil rich Unity state.

About three hundred troops were expected to have arrived in Juba over the weekend through the UN air operation which began on Saturday.

Last week, forces guarding the Bentiu residence of the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the SPLA forces, Lt. General Paulino Matip Nhial clashed with another unit of the Sudan people’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in the town, leaving more than ten people dead, mostly soldiers.

The SPLA General Headquarters in Juba described the incident as a purely army affair and had nothing to do with politics.

Southern Sudan Vice President Dr. Riek Machar said the fighting erupted when the house of General Matip was attacked by heavily armed soldiers during which even tanks were used in the attack.

Authorities have been investigating the incident to establish its cause.
However, in a public letter attributed to him and addressed to the international community, Gen. Paulino Matip accused the SPLA and its Commander-in-Chief, Salva Kiir Mayardit of plotting against him.

He stated that the attack against his guards was coordinated in conjunction with the state governor at the highest level of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.
Speaking from Bentiu, Governor Taban Deng Gai said there was no intention and there will never be bad intention to plan an action against General Matip because there is no reason that warrants such ill act against a member of the same government.

Machar said the removal of the forces from Bentiu was done with the consent of General Paulino Matip in order to defuse any further tension in the town that might arise because of their vicinity and probable contacts with the other unit.

He commended the positive attitude Gen. Matip has maintained by ordering his guards in the town not to retaliate and by not overreacting negatively to the incident.

He added that the Deputy Commander-in-Chief who is currently sick in Juba is ready to discuss and resolve the matter with his Commander-in-Chief after he recovers his health.

Former forces of General Matip, which officially fell under the description of Other Armed Groups (OAGs), in accordance with the 2005 North-South peace deal, joined with the SPLA in the Juba Declaration on unity of the ranks and file in 2006.

Matip was named Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the army and more than 50,000 of his forces were integrated into the SPLA and other organized forces.

However, some of his forces were reserved to continue under his direct command to provide for his security.

In a press conference he conducted shortly after the Bentiu incident, the President of the Government of Southern Sudan and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLA, Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit said he allowed Gen. Paulino Matip to maintain a number of forces to guard his homes in the region for the purposes of building confidence after the Juba Declaration.

Gen. Matip already has several hundreds of guards at his residence inside Juba and in the outskirts of the town.

The government is currently planning to train and establish a special presidential guards unit in order to centralize providing security for the collective senior leadership.

The war has to breakout in Juba, instead of Bentiu!!

“To all of you as the international community, may I bring it to your attention that since I joined this government, all I have received is utter disrespect by the president, general chief of staff and a simple state governor call Taban Deng with a group that I will not mention their names in this document,” he stated.

In the message, Matip points to old resentments, such as the fierce fighting in the 1980s between SPLA and his movement, Anyanya-2, which was the other main insurgent group struggling for primacy. “Years later, even after the death of John Garang, the hatred and witch hunt is still on. The issue is still alive and is being fuelled by the current interim president of the government of south Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit,” he stated.

this is a clear evidence that Paulino Matip doesn’t want people of south sudan to fight among themselves. I hope the SPLM/A led by Salva and his group are heed to this great news carefully because in the near future if they attempt to make the same mistake again then that will be the end of GoSS and I don’t think anybody wants that to happen.

Dear brothers and sisters, we have to maintain this vulnerable peace we have today! If you were there in 1986 after the peace deal signed by the SPLA and Any-Nya 2, you will understand how precious this one is, because we can never advance nor develop, with all this hate. So my wish, call it naive, but think about all the children and mothers that suffered these decades of wars, isnt it time for them to see the fruits of PEACE.

If you are smart enough to work for SPLA, don’t ever think that SPLA is just for Southern Sudan, it is for the whole country no matter what religion, political part you belong to. For those who like to fight or try to let people fight thenselves, you are not benefiting any thing from it but loose of your homes, your people and the future of your coming generations. For you as leaders of Southern Sudan, you have to be carefull with your talking because the out side medias who want to destroy your relationship twist your good ideas and use them against you as bad one. Again watchout of your outside medias, they are your ememies. You don’t have enemy in side the country but them.

Dear brothers and Sisters from the South read the quote from Riek Machar:

" Fighting erupted when the house of General Matip was attacked by heavily armed soldiers during which even tanks were used in the attack".

I doubt 100% about the act of Devil Riek Machar.
He has no leadership style for sure. He talks like supporting Matip.
Matip is a militia leader in the South, how come he has his own troops apart from SPLA.
Mr Thieliny, what do you mean when you said the war will erupted in Juba?

        Folks,

Lt. General Paulino Matip is not only a fearless man, but a man who knows how to use the military tactices. Shifting his own guards to capital city of South Sudan Juba is a good stratagy to deal with Mr. Salva by all mean necessary instead of Mr. Salva’s housekeeper, Mr. Taban.

Mr. Salva must sleep with one eye/ear open all the time because the King of Jungle with his Warriors must know why and how that conspiracy agaisnt his family in Bentiu was conducted since Mr. Salva was the one who order that ruthless killing.

Some folks blindly believe that Mr. Lion Lt. General Matip and his forces can leave Juba for North when D-day comes between his force and Mr. Salva’s gangs within Juba. But they’re very very wrong in that poor concept.

You are just another stupid dude who do not no nothing about your Guandit Matip. you said that he is a fighter , who did he fought for, I have never heard any town captured by the Any-anya two since it was form in 1975. all they do was to go and loot food surviving out of their thick empty brain un till SPLM/A was form later,

They refused to work hand in hand with the SPLA . After they refuse to join in they colloborates with the Arabs fighting spla killing the important figures like Francis Ngor.
After the peace was signed, guandit Matip showed up with 50,000 troups from nowhere.Imagine if this number of troups were fighting any war Arabs would not still be Talking right now. But a peacefull man of the people(Dr.Garang) was fighting for every one freedom, so accept them as SPLA members. Now the Big question is Who is Matip and who is SPLA? Dr. Riak on the other hand Talk like an Audient of the game, what in the hell is wrong with them.

what have anya- nya 2 done since 1975?
absolutely nothing. Riak is lighting his own death, he is motivating a man who pledge for patriotism (Matip) and what he doesn’t know is that his traitoring of the Spla seem to be his Game but this time it will be the end of Teny Dhurgon, No mercy this time. Matip is A good guy but people like Riak are the one spoiling him.

Matip is an official of SPLA and will continue to serve at the pleasure of Salva. He was on the other side during the war. What did he accomplish? SPLA was still winning every engagement. The only thing Matip managed to do was allow jallabah to gain access to oil fields in his state. Now, the Nuer land is polluted and full of diseases that were not heard of before. If you call that an achievement, that is your opinion.

Do you think the SPLA was stupid enough to not plan for any eventuality? Think again.

Dear South Sudanese, these are testing times for our short peace and the signs are looking even more dangerous as days go by. With constant tribal fighting, tribal abuse on this forum and leadership tensions along tribal lines, it is why we look ripe for self destruction. We have the northern enemy and then the west who are not serious at all about implementing concrete actions in Sudan. The road for us will be long, hard and very ugly. Brace yourselves, this is only the start of the consequences of the cancerous way of devisiveness that shall paralise our ability to move forward as one. Lets learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we all die as fools.

      Dear Southerners,

I always get disturb upon hearing the so called General Matiep’s forces. I don’t have any personal problem with Mr Matiep. The truth is that it doesn’t really sounds correct at all for any of the former militia leaders or non former militia leaders to have whatever size of local forces under their direct control outside the main stream SPLA army. This, in my view could encourage and at the same time provoke division within the ranks and files of the SPLM/SPLA’s leadership in case of any misunderstanding among the military and political leaders in South Sudan.

It was because of such issue that forced the late Dr. Garang to strongly condemned the creation of the so called militia forces under Matiep or any other former militia in Juba or in other towns throughout the South. This was why the the South-South dialogue failed to materialized under late Garang leadership which I believe worth it by then. Dr. Garang envisioned the current crisis like the recent attack in Bentiu. This is one of the reason why Dr. Garang was known as a visionary leader.

God bless South Sudan and all it tribes, small and big.

There was not a damn thing that jallabah regime was going to do to protect Matip. But he accepted peace and became integrated. That is a better outcome but if that fails, there is no large amount of lives that cannot be sacrificed to protect South from individuals under the control of jallabah regime.

Integration of militias into conventional Arm Forces is a positive step towards inner peace in the South, army should maintain their barracks away from population areas and do their job which is to guard the national security instead of making chaos and spreading terror in the cities, well-done SS.gov, this action if applied to all government officials whom keep some troops of their own will bring peace and stability in the South.

That was part of why Garang went to Uganda in disguise of other issues. And you are not lying, I know for sure there were going to be major clashes soon after Garang returned from Uganda. Garang would have initiated it. His actions supposed to be pre-empted. But then......

        Little bitch-ass thieliny,

You really think that Matip knew about the planned SPLA operations (restore hope)? Not in a million years. Matip was going to be eliminate one way or the other. He was recruiting children to protect his status as a servant of jallabah protecting oil fields while many Nuer lived in desperate conditions.

It is good that he came to his senses and returned to the South. He cannot and will never defeat SPLA. That is a fact.

Dr. Garang was not a man of empty words. He never forgets nor forgive. Unfortunately, he was killed by the people trying to return Sudan to war because it was a profitable war for many Ugandan generals.

Please let us try to love ourselves before we obtains our Indepedent, otherwise our enemy Arabs will be very happy in seeing the current youths in south sudan they don,t love themselves Please think twices

when General Matip accepted to be integrated in to SPLA, he made himself clear by saying "it is my first time to join SPLA. now that i become part and parcel of SPLA, many bad things against me and my forces will happen, but remember, i Matip Nhial will not leave SPLA for anyone, instead you will leave SPLA for me". yes, his force was mistreated. his forces were not given salary while they were fully integrated and deployed to different divisions, but he managed to calm them down. Matip is a man of his words and clever, only that he is not educated. he (Matip) has fully understood useless dinka tactic of using Nuer against each others. Salva was trying to use Taban Deng against him but he understood it , he order his guards not to retaliate, and now withdraw his forces from unity state to avoid military confrontation with Taban. Do you people know why Matip moved his forces to juba instead of moving it towards the border? Salva must be straight foreward. He must not be too stupid to play with fire which will burn the nation and take us back to square one. Watch out.

This demogaguery talks has put the commander in chief in Danger. H. E president salvatore Kiir Mayaardit’s live is in danger. He will be assisinated by Matip, Riek Machar and Riek Gai for tribal reasons.

Where is the SPLM/A CIA and CID to take out these people?
we in the South cannot and will not tolerate another tribal hate and assisination anymore and this is why I’M saying that the very life of our dear president is in danger and we must act now. These NCP thugs whose militia is being brought to Juba is for the sole purpose of assasinating president Kiir as they did to Dr. John Garang. These Pradigy of Khartoum are plotting against our president Kiir and Kiir must be careful with Matip’s soldiers in Juba.

Why are you peeing all over yourself before the hell break loose in Juba? Salva Kiir brings this dooms to himself. Unless he deals wisely with Matip in this situation, the hell will soon break loose my friend. But don’t be overcome by fear & panic too soon. The dance didn’t start yet!! your SPLM CIA or CID as you called them would not help the situation. The only way out of this is for Salva Kiir to implement smart policies and quit being tribal chief in Juba.

I feel indecision for what Southern Sudan’s Vice Presiden Dr.Riek Machar comment on the fighting that had happed between general Matip’s bodygaurd and SPLA/M’s soldiers.

    Southern Sudan’s Vice Presiden Dr.Riek Machar’s comment.
Southern Sudan Vice Presiden Dr.Riek Machar said the fighting erupted when the house of general Matip was attacked by heavily armed soldiers during which even tanks were used in the attack.

I wonder why Southern Sudan’s Vice Presiden wrote this indefensible statement. Two things to think about, if you all Southern Sudaness perspicacious, one he either support Matip’s bodyguard or form his own government by using Matip’bodyguard. You people of this tribe, what do you people really need to be done to your entire tribe.First, Vice Presiden of Southern Sudan is from your tribe.Second, deputy commander in SPLA military is from your tribe, why you people need to be goon all the time,to ameliorate,I would like you to thanks Southern Sudaness people cause you perfidious and sarcastic on them and they welcome you back again any time wish to come.

The game you people of this tribe have been playing is welknow by entire Sudan with all tribes you do anythings venal. If you people wasn’t with invincible people of Southern Sudan,Sudan land would had have to be taken by Arab relatively South land.

There’s something fishy going on in this move;Every each day seeing Gen.Paulino Matip ’s forces working independently ,is totally just a reflection that there was no juba declaration being abode by.It has its own sense!! Militia forces that has diffused the SPLA ’S ranking ’re still still working independently.

United nation airlifting Matip’s forces to Juba is actually a different involvement.
The UN fores has got to work independently only with the three armies -SPLA,SAF AND JIU in accordance with the CPA.
    They crossed a different line!

I’m very sure; Kiir will not pardon any one who is against SPLA or GOSS so you support but think for distance of reach Khartoum.
The present SPLA are not DINKAS or any tribes in the South but they are joining Army from all tribes and whoever will attempt to attack them will face the consequences of their attack and tanks will be use against like general matip aggressive guards.

The tension which erupted in Bentiu have got no link with politics but people has living in fear that that the same fighting could come ago every one is then appreciate the role played by the SPLA to transport one unit to Juba to avoid the outbreak of violence among the sons of Southern Sudan.

guys, i have gone through all your comments in which some are convinent and some are destructives to our nation.

the best thing that we need to do is to forget the past and move forward with a heart of unity among the southerners instaed of division.

        Nile Flame,

"Guandit" Matip is a well respected elder among the Greater Nuers and a leader in south sudan. You Dinkas want to kill him like a goat in Juba? Go ahead and see the military Tsunami that would engulf south sudan.

This is what "Guandit" Matip said when he joined SPLA in Juba, "it is my first time to join SPLA. now that i become part and parcel of SPLA, many bad things against me and my forces will happen, but remember, i Matip Nhial will not leave SPLA for anyone, instead you will leave SPLA for me".

Salva Kiir master-minded the attack in Bentiu that killed a child and a woman by smashing them with a tank. This war will be fought in Juba, not Bentiu. If you think Salva Kiir and the Dinkas can slaughter Matip like a goat in Juba, start it today. Guandit Matip will be in Juba. He is not going anywhere.

"Guandit" Matp is a man of his words and does not mince them. Just try!! We Nuers have been patience for far too long. No south sudanese would take any Dinka tribalism now. Enough is Enough!!

        Paajok;

How can you compare your liberator with an enemy of which Dinka took ARMS to free your dam mind from Arabs mistreatment.

If you have a wishes of your leader dying shamlesselly, then your grave is soon calling you. Remember Salva is a God creature who will one day die but not how you expect it to be. "He is a committed son of Southern Sudan as his name will be found in S sudan history without malpractise" is a liberator who have shown to you the promise land after the death of Moses (Dr. John garang De Mabior Atem)

If people could just know their strangth like Matip who have boiled like water in kitle during Bentieu incident, than there will be no war, but he must be retricted from having many guards as that incident is an indication of his action any time. I further condemn Dr. Chicken minded who seem to have taken site between Bentieu’s sons by saying Matip Guards attacked by Taban Deng’s Gurads, that’s mean he should be behind Matip ,I mean is using Matip for his interest but he will not suceed forever, shame on him. Is this the leader you always cry about him that is not recognized? Tell me if you are senior than him what measures to be taken against him?.

May God forgive you for you don’t know what you are saying and which way you are taking. But bear in mind apologize for your senseless wishes otherwise you may be curse for your bad words and reasoning as you may not change your attitudes.

I sometimes don’t understand why Southerners hate themselves like this. I think the problem is from we the writers whon turned the website into something else not the purpose. This website was created for us to praise, give ideas which are good for the bettrement of our country, not to abuse oursleves nor bring differences amongs ourselves.

You see guys, no matter how much we hate ourselves, we are southerners and we shall always be southerners. let us instead bring good comments, tell somebody who is wrong that u are wrong and u have to correct yourself like this, in this way we will have unity and a peacefull South Sudan.

I have been reading most of our comments on the website abusing our potential leaders; the president Salva kiir, his vice Dr. Riek Machar and the rest respectively trying to cause problem between them, what shall we gain when we are back to war? It will always be destruction like in the past, this roads u see like this will be destoyed, there will be no proper schools, death will always be the point of discussion, i meant it will not look good atall. Let us try to change the way we put our comments if we want peace to prevail in South Sudan.

          Thanks. James Tut Biel.
