Botswana says Sudan’s Bashir will be arrested if he visits

June 9, 2009 (WASHINGTON) – The government of Botswana announced today that it will arrest Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir if he visits its territory.

Botswana is a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has issued an arrest warrant for Bashir last March on seven counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with alleged war crimes committed in Darfur.

The foreign minister of Botswana Phandu Skelemani told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that his country has legal duty to help ensure the appearance of Bashir before the court.

The president of Botswana Ian Khama was reported to have told his Tanzanian counterpart in May that his government supported the arrest warrant.

Botswana is the second country in Africa to publicly announce that it will apprehend Bashir if he visits.

Last month South African officials warned Bashir against travelling to attend President Jacob Zuma’s inauguration ceremony or else he will face arrest.

Bashir has travelled to more than half a dozen regional countries in a show of defiance against the ICC. However none of the countries he visited were ICC members.

More than 30 African countries are have ratified the ICC Statute making them legally obligated to cooperate with the court in arresting the Sudanese president.

However many countries across the continent condemned the arrest warrant while some have publicly declared that it will not honor its obligations under the Statute.

A two-day meeting in the Ethiopian capital this week convening African ICC members failed to agree on a mass withdrawal from the court as proposed to protest the arrest warrant.

Diplomats at the meeting said that the participants would instead call for a UN Security Council (UNSC) deferral of the indictment as empowered under the Rome Statute of the ICC.

Congratluation to government of Botswana announced to arrest Bashir if he will visit his country. I will be glaful if Afriacan ICC members will support Botswana decision and work toward peace in Africa then to develop crime. We need Afriaca to be peaceful like other part of the world and share resources equally with fairness of job employment in all region. We need Afrian leaders to work like Madela of South Africa but not like Osma Bin-Ladan

I extremely impressed and appreciated the decission taken by Mr.Ian of Botswana to arrest Beshir.I wish the rest of Africans should know that the totalitarian regime currently in Khartoum is purely supporting the objectives of Bin Ladan and that why there is no possible solutions to stop the killing and rape in Darfur.I however would like to inform all African people that the recent situation in Sudan, is not for Sudanese a lone but it should soon go to the rest of the continet. In other hand, the so called Arabs in Sudan are struggling to take big mother African country ’Sudan" to be Arab conuntry that is deal already made by Arab countrise so watch out.

Thanks and wonderful to have braved President of Botswana to expressed strong words to President Bashir. Otherwise, President Bashir is some one who has "a person’s character like a pregnant woman with no change" in his mind... Foolish dog?? President Bashir not willing to go for ICC indictment.

All ICC countries members should come together then silent President Bashir to accept ICC indictment.

Bravo FM Skelemani, and President Khama. You have proven true African patriotism and Pan Africanism. Omaar Albeshiir( omaar means a donkey) is a pappet of the Islamo Iranian Arab World terrorism of the Bin Laden group and the like. It is a real shame to watch respected African Leaders who are considered heroes keep silent or even some of them shamelessly support this homaar albeshiir. This world criminal must be handed over to face justice he so long has denied others. Long live African patriotism. aneetagii@yahoo.com

          Dear Makol,
wherever there’s one, there’s two, or vice versa. When making commentary, make sure to mention other part of the thought. For example, you wrote," Bostwana to Sudan, is define as a SECOND African Country" This thought is not complete without providing the other part ( the other first country, or the country preceded Botswana relative to Sudan’s genocide). You can not have 2 without 1, or you can not have an end without a beginning, and so on...

Many thanks to the government of Botswana for openly declaring that it will arrest Bashir. I can’t really know the type of charm that Bashir has that makes other African heads of states think that the warrant of arrest issued by the ICC is unjustifiable. This has made Bashir to grow horns and believe that he is untouchable as other African leaders are rallying behind him through the AU to request for the deferall of the warrant of arrest. I believe that the supporters of Bashir are not sympathisers of human suffering. If I am a head of state, I could just arrest Bashir if he comes to my territory-whether am a member of the ICC or not just because of the suffering he is inflicting onto the people of Darfur.

Bashir now thinks that he can play his stupid games through shallow minded people like Lam Akol to divide the southerners so that with a divided South Sudan people in the south will not have confidence in the GoSS but to rather advocate for a united Sudan.

Shame on Bashir. His chances of freely moving on the African continent gradually reducing leading to his final arrest as miore African heads of states who in the meantime are silent will declare their positions like Botswana and even his final arrest will be by a country that is quiet on the issue of the arrest warrant

Mr. El Bashir, Botswana will never leech your dirty feet like the others because of your blackmail. Do think it would kneel down to you because of your bloody money that you suck from our beloved south’s wealth.
Mr. president, in Africa Botswana is regarded by most economists as one of Africa’s major success stories. It is rated the least corrupt country in Africa, according to an international corruption watchdog, Transparency International. By one estimate, it has the fourth highest gross national income at purchasing power parity in Africa, giving it a standard of living around that of Mexico and Turkey.

I think Mr. president that is the reason why Botswana is not leeching your contaminated wounds like the other drunk bloodysuckers

    Guess what,.........DOOM DAY IS NEAR!!!!!!
