Arab states mulling an offer of safe haven to Sudan’s Bashir: report

February 10, 2009 (NEW YORK) — Several Arab countries are contemplating an offer of refuge for the Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir following a likely decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) judges to issue an arrest warrant for him.

The daily Al-Hayat newspaper quoting Arab diplomatic sources at the United Nations said that there are discussions on “Arab responsibility” towards Sudan in lights of developments with regards to the ICC.

An Arab League delegation led by its deputy Secretary General is currently visiting the New York to lobby UN Security Council (UNSC) members for a resolution under Article 16 deferring ICC charges against Bashir for a minimum period of 12 months that can be renewed indefinitely.

The ICC expected to release a decision within days agreeing to issue an arrest warrant for Bashir at the request of its prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo who accused Al-Bashir of masterminding a campaign to get rid of the African tribes in Darfur; Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa.

The diplomats said that an unspecified number of Arab countries are working on creating an acceptable offer to Bashir that would convince him to be hosted by them in return for protection from judicial prosecution.

However they stressed that such an offer would be extended only “if the need arises”.

Some sources in the Sudanese capital have said that the Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah offered to host Bashir during their meeting last November to avoid the complications of an ICC arrest warrant.

However Sudanese officials including the powerful presidential assistant Nafi Ali Nafi have denied any intention of accepting such a plan.

Bashir is the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) candidate for the upcoming presidential elections that are due to be held this year.

Khartoum and a number of regional organizations including the African Union (AU) are racing against time to secure a suspension of the ICC move before an arrest warrant.

However, it now appears unlikely that the UNSC would back a deferral given threats by the US & France to use their veto power to block such a move.

This is why i call you as arabs islamic terrorist group of shriaw laws, your beliefs and actions are for criminals and sadists, because you want save your fellow member. How do you look at durfurian lives as an easy task to offer bashir a refugee. I know that he is using the remaing wealth (oil) in his pocket to save with himself. But unless you keep him under a ground or get him a cave and tunnels if you want to let bashir be alive. But physical or logically bashir will still get himself to ICC by anytime.

For those who consider themselves western slaves can say anything they wish but remember however stupid anyone thinks, issuing arrest warrant to a sitting president is like assassination of head of state.Consequences? Death...Death...War...war..endless.God forbid.
For those double standards who have never suffered under western burocracy better you shut up because such nonesense may call for world war 111 which noboby want.We are fighting economic war now and it has not been solved yet.
Luis moreno ocampo’s decision is worst than HIV/AIDS and because it put a whole country in jeopardy and war.
For those of us who lost everything due to wars, seeing something like this only promotes the negatives.
Though many western countries pretend to like Africa just because they want to rip us off.
Did I really mention that Bush killed thousands of iraqis including Saddam, the hatred promoted there is still terminating more But no warrant Issued. Is it because he is white.Ehud olmert wow killer machine is not charged why.
Any war in Africa creates more modern slaves for the west who will work in factories and promote their economy.
Please, Sudanese of all sorts must at this difficult time come together unitedly against Ocampo and his crew as this will not only bring turmoil but render most or all homeless.
Western burocracy should not divide you.Your home ,your choice, your right.
ICC is made for Africans only thats why Bush(managing Director of Guantanamo) and Olmert never been charged with crimes against humanity because they are legally allowed to kill every one officially.
AS a Sudanese during this difficult time am at heart with you in moaning this western indecency and disrepect for Africans.Whoever will double stand must remember that West dont have permanent friends therfore You might be next.
Can someone Help me Phone Mugabe and convey my congratulations to on having made west bend over for him.
Africans must stop believing in whites because guys make money through instability ad hatred promotion.Iam living with them and know them well..
Be nice to yourselves and unite against ocampo,Dont fight among yourselves, fight them,Dont kill yourselves kill Ocampo who has proved being hatred making machine and racist.

If only Southerners can borrow one thing (together as one)from the Arabs, sky would be the limit. The Arabs are characterised by coming together to solve a problem that affects a sister or brother.

Foreseeing danger on Bashir, they are now gathering to counter the ICC motive by creating a save haven for Mr. Bashir. Whether this works or not, is yet to be seen but the message is clear that they are in solidarity with one of their own.

For us, we associate ourselves in the South with hatred, tribalism, clanism, land grabbism, tribal clashism and everything that end with "ism".

When shall we live to see Southern Sudan beyond the isms?

Do we bare "patriotism" from all the bad words with an -ism suffix that you associate with the south?

You hit the nail on the head. Lack of patriotism explains the existence of the negative isms in the South.

negative isms exist in all parts of Sudan. (patriotism) what a concept i dont think it exists in the Sudanese society today. Ignorance and selfishness are the main characteristics of our society today .

Lest those who are Junubeen think that all Junubeen are like the morons here, I want to assure you that there is another breed of Junubeen who are decent and tolerant people.
