Wife of Sudan Islamist leader accuses Sudanese officials of corruption

December 29, 2008 (KHARTOUM) – The wife of the leading Islamic opposition leader blasted Sudanese officials including the president accusing them of accumulating wealth through their positions in the government.

Wisal Al-Mahdi wife of Islamist leader Hassan al-Turabi told the pro-SPLM newspaper Ajras Al-Hurriya in an interview that the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) “demonstrated greed for money and power”.

Al-Mahdi said that NCP figures contributed to the downfall of the Islamic ideology in Sudan “who built palaces and luxurious homes and ride private jets”.

Al-Turabi, a former ally of President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir, was the government’s ideological mastermind in the 1990s and the De-facto ruler.

However Al-Bashir and Al-Turabi split ranks and the latter was jailed on accusations of conspiracy. He was released in October 2003.

The opposition leader was jailed again for more than a year in 2004 over accusations of connections with an alleged coup plot before being released in 2005.

Al-Turabi’s wife provided what she claimed to be examples of corruption by top government officials.

“This does not require any proof. I ask you to go to Kafoori area to see for yourself 31 pieces of land owned by the president and his relatives. Then go to Al-Raqi area to see the homes of Al-Bashir, Ali Osman [2nd Vice President], Mustafa Ismail [presidential adviser]” she said.

Al-Mahdi revealed that the minister of finance and economy Awad Al-Jaz bought apartments in Dubai prestigious Palm Islands.

“Al-Jaz bought 30 apartments and wanted to buy more but they [Dubai authorities] rejected that and asked to him to disclose the source of his money but he declined to show them” she said.

“Of course the source of his money is Sudan’s oil” she added.

The prices of apartments in the Dubai Palm Island range between $1.7 million - $4.2 million.

The issue of corruption in Sudan has been largely minimized by Khartoum observers say. Sudanese officials are not required to submit a report showing their net worth despite some lawmakers pushing for it.

Sudan has consistently named by watchdog Transparency International as one of the most corrupt countries in Africa together with Chad and Guinea.

wisal, you are right, but what i know is that if you
keep complaining, El bashir will turn into arresting your husband El Turabi. so sit back and relax, allow Bashir and his colleagues you have just mentioned to enrich themselves because they are soon going to the court.

Wisal Al - Mahadi, there are two things you need to be reminded. Firstly, Al Turabi your husband is an architecturer of all wrong doings committed by NIF factions under his leadership or the one led by Al Bashir including robbing the nation. Al Turabi ordered the use of Sudan’s public money to by southerners in the SPLM/A, kill northern opposition figures, accommodate international terrorist groups in Khartoum and buy leathal weapons to kill whoever need a piece of cake etcetra.

Secondly, you are playing with fire! Racist and separatist journalists of Al Bashir NIF’s faction Ali Ismail Attabani and Atayb Mustafa will not tolerate your comment, so be careful.

Finally, Mr Al Turabi, his brother In - Law Sadiq Al Sidiq Abdel-Rahaman and their families should put their names on the list of Dinosaurs by leaving political life. If a referendum is carried in Sudan today about these two Dinosaurs for whether they should leave the Sudanese alone, about 90% will favour their leaving politics and lot of problems of Sudan will leave with them.

Hello Brothers and Sisters out there!!

I guess everyone has a very happy holiday wherever you are residing at or from. Anyway, I am a new person to the board-room and I would like to thank you all for the times you have been using so far to talk about our country critical issues. So there is no question that Al Turabi was the cause of this trouble in Sudan with his co-friend, Bashir. Now, he is saying that I wish I knew not to empower the wrong person with wrong ideologist. Anyhow, what goes aroud come back to hurt you so they better be careful with his entire family, relatives, and so forth. Finally, they are even embolding him (Bashir) by saying things without not being serious like follow-up to the end of his power. And thanks for your contributions as usual and let keep in touch to feed ourselves in order to find the best solution for our new as whole or even two countries. Bye!!
      Yours David King

Mrs Wisal Al-mahadi, has air out a good secret message to her own country men. But we all know that corruption is something practice on a daily bases in Sudan. As it’s mention by France President, that days are numbered for President Bashir if he doesn’t accept the I.C.C order.Because of this presure, I think Bashir and the others big fundamentalist Ideology like Turabi himself can take what ever they went and run out to their Arab country.

      What do you guys think?
