Four killed following cattle-rustling in Sudan’s Jonglei

By Mayen Daniel Mangok

December 21, 2007 (BOR, Jonglei) — Four people were killed in violence that began with a deadly cattle-rustling raid by Mundari against Dinka on a remote Bor village, last Wednesday.

Cattle_recently_moved.jpgA group of armed Mundari attacked a Dinka cattle camp in Laguli on Wednesday December 19 in the morning killing one person during the raid. However, the death toll rose to four after the Dinka launched a retaliatory attack.

“We were sleeping in Laguli Cattle camp, around 5:00 AM in the morning when a group of armed Mundari men opened fire into cattle camp” said Wai Malith, a 32-years man who was also wounded during the raid.

“They shot me on the chest and killed one person who was sleeping with him. We followed them into their military camp and a fierce battle ensued. We seized 13 AK-47 machine guns after which I got shot in the leg” he added.

A group of wounded people, who are receiving treatment in Bor civil hospital, blamed the Mundari for initiating the clashes saying that the cattle is on other side of river Nile bank where Mundari reside next to the Laguli camp.

The list of wounded included two children and a couple of men in their thirties, but it was not immediately clear what the casualties were in the attackers side.

There was no word from the local authorities but situation in the area is returning to normal. The clashes claimed around sixty heads of cattle shot during cross fire.

The new governor of Jonglei today promised to make disarmament his top priority among other things.

“There needs to be disarmament of all civilians in Jonglei state, and other thing will follow” said Kuol Manyang in his speech today to the local radio.

But it is not clear whether other neighbors like Mundari, Toposa, and Boya of central Equatoria will be disarmed too or it will be limited to Jonglei state.

Local people say that the root cause of insecurity in Jonglei state seems to be the need for cattle as source of wealth. But the main worry among locals is that they will be disarmed without adequate protection from similar attacks.

    Attentio:
Mr. Mangok, it is very easy to input data but difficult to pass information. Which tribe do you mean exactly? Who raided the Dinka cattle? The Mundari or the Murle?

I am asking this because confusing information will cause confussion and unnacessary suffering.

    God bless you.

I am just wondering what is all about? It is just a disguised militia stirring up tribal conflicts. It is obvious! I wish the big people from the North can take a stand if they are for peace! I doubt they will take any………… Do they like it? Old British rule: divide and rule? uh!

I don’t thing we have much time to lose when it comes to civilian protection. Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) has a soul and final say in these senseless killings.

It is unfortunate that these kind things still happen in Southern Sudan but one-sided reporting of the issue by people like Mangok whom pretend to journalist with ulterior motives is totally unacceptable. The Mundari did not attacked the Dinka; the Dinka attacked the Mundari and as usual, they wanted to occupy Mundariland. For your information, Laguli is a Mundari Village situated in Central Equatoria state. What were the Bor Dinka doing in Mundari Village?

Let Murle rest for now, I hope you people don’t mention Murle name at this moment for God’s sake because they are currently business with their own livestocks in thier villages without minding someone’s else property.

    Peace for you all.
