Jonglei: army collects “thousands of guns” on first day of disarmament

March 14, 2012 (BOR) – Over 4,000 riffles were collected in Bor, the capital of Jonglei state, and thousands more in other towns and villages in the first day of disarmament, officials say.

Jonglei state governor, Kuol Manyang, said the weapons, if not retrieved, could have “turned Bor into Mogadishu.”

The president of South Sudan, Salva Kiirr opened Operation Restore Peace in Jonglei on Monday.

Jonglei state has been subject to heightened ethnic violence between members of the Murle and Luo-Nuer, which the UN estimates has led to the displacement of 120,000 people.

At his address Kiir said "You have no tribes or home, your tribes and home is South Sudan.” Previous disarmament campaigns have led to ethnic groups claiming unequal disarmament has left them vulnerable to attack from their rivals

The Sudan People’s Liberation Army’s chief of general staff, James Hoth Mai has said that 150,000 troops have been deployed in Jonglei to carry out the exercise.

The UN and US have expressed their support for the disarmament but are concerned that it may not take place peacefully.

The young state of South Sudan is awash with arms after more than two decades of civil war, which ended with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005.

The Lou Nuer and Murle must disarm like Bor did with 4,000 guns collected.
Failure to do so may result in a tragedy that will not facilitate future disarmament if Bor re-arm.

Let it not be a fake recollection of already assembled old guns in stores. They should be transparent and show it on TV how the forces actually collect the guns from individuals or homes. Otherwise it will be difficult to believe because it happened before. I hope the forces also have the ability to recover guns hidden in rivers or buried in the ground. And don’t sell the guns again to civilians.

I am glad that Major General Peter Gatdet Yaka who physically carries out the disarmament in Jonglei has started it in Bor area because of its vicinity with the government’s headquarters. Kuol Manyang is right that such thousands of arms in the Bor area could have turned it into Mogadishu of Somalia. But let the disarmament be real, no deceptions please.

And the guns collected should be taken to Juba so that they don’t get back into the hands of the very civilians like in the past. The question is how will the army disarm the armed Murle community who are not in their villages but roaming with guns in groups of thousands in the bushes. And the Lou Nuer may fear to hand in guns unless they are sure that the Murle are disarmed first. Think about it.

You people are idiots, no appreciation at all. What do you mean by the "plan of Bor?" Bor accept to be disarmed first and you insist being suspicious? If you are from Lou-Nuer, then we are not enemies in these tribal fightings, we are friends and you shouldn’t be worried of weapons burried which I think not happen in Bor. I agreed with Midiit that Murle youth will burry all weapons in the bushes.

Let all the police stores be disarmed and leave only guns they carry.

For someone who may beat his/her chest that the disarmament has initially commenced in Bor areas, i would advise to not bragged that much cause it’s the beginning not the end, and It’s not ending until all the guns are retrieved from Lou Nuers and Murle as well as it happened in Bor.Thus, the success of disarmament willn’t be gauged by how many guns collected but who still attack who.........

For instance, if Lou Nuer continued to attack Bor or Murle , then the disarmament campaign will remain there until they ceased that habit.Same way as to others. So to see it shortsightedly and rushed for shortcut to avert the disarmament as what is allegedly happening in Lou Nuer where they are shipping their guns to Unity State and same way as as Murle running to E.E to hide is a mere mediocrity.

There’s something I quite didn’t understand about disarment in Jonglei. Every time, it starts in Bor and let fails to reach other communities leaving Bor vulnerable to the attacks. Why keep doing that? I don’t understand it really. For all evidences point out that it is not Bor that starts tribal fighting and is the less lawless community in Jonglei. I wish any honest guy to explain this to me.

This disarmament is tilted in the sense that it will favour somes like Lou Nuer whom even if disarmed will still get their weapons from the rebels in Unity state as their cousins.
There are alot of guns flowing in unity state at the hand of rebels or unity state citizens which can be obtained with ease and used wrongly to commit crimes.

The solution should have if peace with the rebel is attained
