Awad al-Jaz, is a veteran Islamist figure in the National Congress Party (NCP) and is currently Sudan’s oil minister.

On 23 February 2012 Awad al-Jaz was replaced as NCP’s Economic Secretariat chief by former governor of the Central Bank of Sudan Sabir Ahmed al-Hassan.

Al-Jaz has also held the position of Sudanese energy minister and in 2005 announced the discovery of oil in Sudan’s troubled western region - Darfur.

As minister of Industry in November 2010 he oversaw the failure of the White Nile Sugar factory to open for the second time, after a previous delay a year previously while Jalal al-Digair headed the ministry.
