Two journalists sentenced to 14 years on terrorism charges
A week after being found guilty of participating in a terrorist organization and preparing a terrorist attack, the Ethiopian journalists Reyot Alemu, columnist for the Amharic-language weekly Fitih, and Woubeshet Taye, deputy editor of Awramba Times – which has now closed own – were each sentenced yesterday to 14 years’ imprisonment.
“It is difficult to understand the Ethiopian justice system’s stubborn insistence on strictly applying an anti-terrorism law that has been accused of infringing on constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, and on convicting journalists who have not been proved to have done anything more than make contact with opposition figures,” Reporters Without Borders said.
The organisation believes proof beyond a reasonable doubt, which is the highest standard of evidence required to validate a criminal conviction in trials, was not met by the prosecution.
“These prison sentences are distressing and cause serious damage to Ethiopia’s image. We strongly hope that this case will be reviewed on appeal. Reyot Alemu and Woubeshet Taye are no criminals and must be released.”
Reporters Without Borders carried out a fact-finding mission in Ethiopia between 9 and 12 January.

Une semaine apr[[#232]]s avoir [[#233]]t[[#233]] reconnus coupables de "participation [[#224]] une organisation terroriste et pr[[#233]]paration d'une attaque terroriste", les deux journalistes [[#233]]thiopiens Reyot Alemu, [[#233]]ditorialiste pour l'hebdomadaire en amharique Fitih, et Woubeshet Taye, directeur adjoint de l'hebdomadaire en amharique Awramba Times – lequel a cess[[#233]] de para[[#238]]tre – ont [[#233]]t[[#233]] condamn[[#233]]s, le 26 janvier 2012, [[#224]] 14 ans de prison ferme.
"L'obstination de la justice [[#233]]thiopienne [[#224]] appliquer avec la plus grande fermet[[#233]] la loi antiterroriste, alors m[[#234]]me qu'elle est accus[[#233]]e d'empi[[#233]]ter sur les libert[[#233]]s garanties par la Constitution, est incompr[[#233]]hensible. De m[[#234]]me que celle de reconna[[#238]]tre coupables des journalistes dont il n'a pas [[#233]]t[[#233]] prouv[[#233]] qu'ils aient fait quoi que ce soit d'autre qu'[[#234]]tre en contact avec des personnalit[[#233]]s de l'opposition", a d[[#233]]clar[[#233]] Reporters sans fronti[[#232]]res.
L'organisation estime que des preuves irr[[#233]]futables de leur culpabilit[[#233]], n[[#233]]cessaires pour les reconna[[#238]]tre comme des criminels, n'ont pas [[#233]]t[[#233]] fournies par le procureur.
"Ces peines de prison sont navrantes et nuisent gravement [[#224]] l'image de l'Ethiopie. Nous esp[[#233]]rons vivement que cette affaire sera revue en appel. Reyot Alemu et Woubeshet Taye ne sont pas des criminels, ils doivent [[#234]]tre lib[[#233]]r[[#233]]s", a conclu Reporters sans fronti[[#232]]res.
L'organisation vient d'effectuer une mission d'enqu[[#234]]te en Ethiopie, du 9 au 12 janvier 2012.
