Rebecca Nyandeng Garang de Mabior

Name: Rebecca Nyandeng Garang de Mabior

Position: Presidential Adviser on Human Rights and Gender to the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Career: In 2005 Rebecca became the first Minister for Roads and Bridges in the Government of South Sudan.

Family: Rebecca is the widow of the late John Garang de Mabior. Garang was the chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement - the former rebel movement that signed a peace with the Sudanese government in Khartoum in January 2005.

John Garang died in a helicopter accident in August 2005 just weeks after becoming the First Vice President of Sudan and the President of South Sudan, which was granted autonomous status until the region voted for independence in 2011.

Both Rebecca and her eldest son Mabior Garang have been critical of the SPLM-led government since South Sudan’s independence in July 2011.
