Background

Abdul Hamid Musa Kasha won the April 2010 gubernatorial election in South Darfur beating Al-Haj Adam Youssef, the candidate of the Popular Congress Party, who was appointed the 2nd Vice President of Sudan after the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) in 2011.

The DDPD reorganised Darfur’s state from three into five and Kasha was removed from the South Darfur governorship, triggering violent demonstrations in the state capital Nyala. Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir blamed the events on those officials in the state whose interests are aligned with Kasha.

Controversially in January 2012, Kasha refused to take up the position of East DarfurGovernor after Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir issued a decree appointing him.

Kasha said he would only accept the position if he was provided enough funding. His demands were rejected and he was replaced by another figure. In February 2012 he was picked to lead the Wise Men Commission of Darfur for Unity and Reconciliation.

However, in April 2013, after receiving assurances Kasha was appointment the Governor of East Darfur. In a meeting between Kasha and Al Bashir in 2013, the president reaffirmed his support to the institutions of the new state with all the necessary means to construct ministries and public establishments

Established on 10 January 2012 in line with the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), the East Darfur state is the homeland of Rizaigat and Beni Hussein tribal groups.
