Geography South Kordofan State is part of the Kordofan region of Sudan. It shares border with Darfur to the west, North Kordofan State to the north, White Nile State to the east and The Republic of South Sudan to the south.

Abyei
Abyei is an oil-producing fertile area claimed by Sudan and South Sudan. Under the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement residents of the area were due to hold a referendum to decide on its future in January 2011. The vote did not go ahead as the two countries could not decide on who was allowed to take part.
