Yohannes Gebremeskel Tesfamariam

Name: Yohannes Gebremeskel Tesfamariam

Rank: Maj. Gen.

Born: 1960

Position: Head of mission and force commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).

Education: Masters Degree in Peace and Security Studies from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.

Career: Tesfamariam was appointed by the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon in March 2013 succeeding his compatriot Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede Tesfay, who completed his assignment in January 2013.

Before taking up the UN post Tesfamariam served for 35 years in the Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF), which he served in various command capacities including as head of the peacekeeping department and military intelligence unit of the Ethiopian defense ministry.

He also served as the commander of the army corps and the Ethiopia government’s Commissioner for the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE).

Tesfamariam UNISFA reportedly joined UNISFA in September 2012 as deputy force commander.
