Background
Lt-Gen Abdel Galil is a veteran SAF officer who served in the war against South Sudan for 12 years. It is believed that he used to be close to President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir and served as head of his security for six years.
He was one of the strongest candidates for the post of Interior Minister in 2011 and for four years served as Sudan’s military attaché in Nairobi, Kenya.
Abdel Galil enjoys tremendous popularity among Islamists and last year he gathered around 1,000 Islamists at his home including former presidential adviser Ghazi Salahaddin al-Atabani.
