Background:
Mahdi Ibrahim was elected by the IM’s Shura Council to the position of Chairman despite after strong competition from former Sudanese health minister, Abdulla Sid Ahmad. He was elected on 18 November 2012 the day after the conclusion of the 8th Islamic Movement General Conference held in Khartoum from 16 to 17 November.
Mahdi Ibrahim replaced Ibrahim Ahmad Omer, who had served for at least one four-year term.
