Background
JEM-Sudan announced its split from the mainstream of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) led by Gibril Ibrahim in September 2012.
The group, said to constitute 40%-65% of JEM by diplomatic sources, signed a peace with the Sudanese government in Doha in March 2013.
However, in May 2013 the group’s leader Mohamed Bashar Ahmed and his deputy Arko Suleiman Dahia were killed by a JEM attack near the Sudan-Chad border.
