Name: Justice and Equality Movement - Sudan (JEM-S)

Previously known as:

  • Justice and Equality Movement - Military Council (JEM-MC)
  • Justice and Equality Movement - Bashar (JEM-Bashar)

Background

JEM-Sudan announced its split from the mainstream of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) led by Gibril Ibrahim in September 2012.

The group, said to constitute 40%-65% of JEM by diplomatic sources, signed a peace with the Sudanese government in Doha in March 2013.

However, in May 2013 the group’s leader Mohamed Bashar Ahmed and his deputy Arko Suleiman Dahia were killed by a JEM attack near the Sudan-Chad border.
