Name: Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
Position: President of Somalia
Elected: 10 September 2012
Background
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s election brought an end to Somalia’s flawed eight year long political transition period and was a major event in the Horn of Africa.
According to the Rift Valley Institute in October 2012:
The election of an active member of civil society who has consistently worked to end Somalia’s conflict has both electrified Somalis and surprised and relieved the international community. This may herald a Somali version of an Arab Spring, with all the uncertainties that entails.
Within a month of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s election, AMISOM wrested control of Kismayo critically weakening al-Shabaab. Mohamud’s administration faces a daunting number of difficult tasks ahead. This is a window of opportunity for Somalia that the international community must approach with the right policies.
