Career
Daniel Awet Akot, famously failed in his attempt to be the SPLM’s candidate for Governor of Lakes state in the 2010 general elections.
Awet’s opponents claim that he was behind the decision of South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir to remove the elected Governor of Lakes state, Chol Tong Mayay, in January 2013.
Lakes state politicians have also accused Awet of seeking to avenge those who voted against his selection through the controversial imposition of Mabor Ater Dhuol as SPLM Lakes state acting secretary. The prolonged saga ended with Dhuol’s swearing in ceremony in February 2013, which was boycotted by most senior SPLM members in Lakes state.
SPLM officials such as Andrew Macuor Romdhel in March 2013 have accused Mabor Ater Dhuol of sacking them for political reasons because they did not support his candidature. However, Dhuol said the reason was due to alleged leaking of documents to the press.
