Established: 1989
Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS) was a consortium of UN agencies (including UNICEF and the World Food Programme) and over NGOs to provide humanitarian assistance during the 1983-2005 Sudanese Civil War between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A).
OLS was the first UN operation which engaged with a non-state armed group - the SPLA - without conferring recognition to the rebel movement. The mission aimed to deliver humanitarian assistance to all civilians in need, regardless of their location or political affiliation.
