Name: Ibrahim al-Amin
Position: Secretary General of the National Umma Party (NUP), led by al-Sadiq al-Mahdi.
Profile:
Ibrahim al-Amin lost the race to become the Secretary General of the National Umma Party in 2009 to Sideeg Ismail.
But in 2012 he replaced Ismail when the party became disillusioned with his leadership and percieved closeness to the ruling National Congress Party of President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir.
Al-Amin voted in despite al-Mahdi nominating Hassan Tag al-Deen in an attempt to replace Ismail with a someone from Darfur, arguing that if Al-Amin’s election would leave all the party’s senior positions filled by figures from Central Sudan.
Sources at the NUP told Sudan Tribune that al-Mahdi initially insisted on bringing a Darfuri figure as replacement arguing that if al-Amin is picked, all leadership positions will be occupied by individuals from central Sudan.
The failure of Ismail to get a new term was considered by observers to be the result of the alliance between the ’General Current’ faction in the party who opposed his selection in 2009 and others who wanted to see him voted out this time.
