AU, UN delegations in Sudan discuss bilateral cooperation

AFRICAN UNION-AFRICAN MISSION IN SUDAN

Khartoum - May 13,2005

The Special Representative of African Union Chairperson and Head of African Mission in Sudan, Ambassador, Baba Gana Kingibe, received Friday May 13, 2005, a UN team led by Jean-Marie Guehenno, Under Secretary-General, Department of Peace-keeping Operations

The UN delegation included Ambassador, Lakhdar Brahimi , Special Advisor to UN Secretary-General, and Ian Pronk, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Sudan.

The two sides discussed among other things, bilateral cooperation between AU and UN especially at the level of their two missions in Sudan as has been provided for in the recent UN Security Council Resolutions.

UN delegation has put emphasis on the vital role played by African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS), expressing UN readiness to further support to and enhance coordination with AMIS in order for it to achieve its target.

Ambassador, Baba Gana Kingibe expressed satisfaction at the current cooperation and coordination between the two organizations and their Missions in Sudan, adding that AU looks forward for more cooperation in the light of the expansion of its Mission as has recently been decided by AU Peace and Security Council.

At the end of the meeting, in reply to Media questions, Ambassador, Kingibe said AU Mediation Team will return to Khartoum early next week to continue consultations with the parties concerned on convening of the coming round of the Abuja peace talks. On the draft framework protocol, he stated that UN has welcomed it, adding that it is open for comments by all parties to serve as a good basis for negotiations.

It is to be noted that the UN delegation will visit AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa after their tour in Sudan which includes visit to Darfur to assess the humanitarian situation on the ground and will take this opportunity to visit AU Force Headquarters.
