Sudanese govt, former rebels sign agreement on name of new currency

KHARTOUM, Feb 22, 2005 (SUNA) — A memorandum of understanding between the Government and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has been signed in Nairobi, Kenya, indicating that the two parties have agreed that the new currency to be in circulation during the interim period shall be named Sudanese Pound.

one_pound1.jpgThe Deputy Governor of the Bank of Sudan and head of the government delegation, Al- Fatih Zeinel- Abdin, has signed on behalf of the Sudan Government, while Commissioner of Development and Economic Planning and head of SPLM delegation Arther Shul signed for the SPLM.

The signing was witnessed by representatives of the World Bank and Norwegian Foreign Ministry.

Zeinel-Abdin explained that delegations of the government and SPLM engaged in meetings in Nairobi focusing on the design and issuing of new currency and amount and types of currencies circulated in the areas of the SPLM in the south, pointing out that the meeting started on February 18 by a workshop supervised by experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
