SPLM official accuses area militia of violating peace truce

NAIROBI, Feb 18, 2005 (Sudan Radio Service) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) commissioner of Akobo County has accused an area militia, allegedly supported by the government of Sudan, of violating the comprehensive peace agreement.

Duyak told Sudan Radio Service by satellite phone that area militia under the command of Brig Timothy Taban Juk attacked Akobo town at 6 o’clock Friday morning, killing one Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) soldier and wounding two others. He called this a serious vioaltion of the cease-fire.

Completely a violation of the peace agreement. I’m safe but I’m tired because they have been running after me for two hours; they wanted to kill me.”

Commissioner Chol said that his soldiers had been scattered in the bushes around Akobo, but that his forces have now surrounded Akobo town and are planning an attack.
