MSF stays put in Sudan’s Darfur despite death of its worker

PARIS, France, Dec 25, 2004 (PANA) — Medical NGO “Médecins sans frontière” or Doctors without borders, with the French acronym, MSF, Friday pledged to continue its humanitarian aid work in Sudan’s troubled western region of Darfur despite renewed violence and the death of one of its workers.

Mohamed Salih Bosh, a Sudanese MSF staff was killed 17 December during fighting between the Sudan Government and Darfur rebels in Labado, south of Darfur.

But MSF said in a statement in Paris Friday the aid worker was not targeted “as an MSF member.”

It, however, deplored the killing, and expressed concern over
the consequences of renewed fighting on the civilian population in Darfur.

MSF promised to continue its humanitarian assistance to some
750,000 displaced people scattered across three countries in
the region.

For security reasons, it said its workers would not return to
Labado, where a nutrition centre and clinic had been set up.

Labado, with a population of 27,000, has been the scene of
fighting over the past few days between rival factions,
forcing many residents to flee, MSF said.
