Doctor killed, four injured in Sudan’s Darfur

NYALA, South Darfur, Nov 8, 2004 (Al-Ray Al-Amm) — Unidentified gunmen 20 km from Nyala town attacked a joint medical team of the WHO and the Southern Darfur State Ministry of Health.

During the attack a specialist working at Nyala Hospital, Ihab Taha, was killed, but his five companions escaped. However, they were robbed of all the money they were carrying, including money to pay the salaries of Kas Hospital employees. The money stolen amounted to about 50m Sudanese pounds.

Humanitarian Commissioner in Nyala Husayn Ibrahim Kurshum told al-Ra’y al-Amm that four doctors, among them a Jordanian national and two employees of the Ministry of Health, were on their way from Nyala town to Kas, carrying with them money to pay the salaries of the hospital employees, were attacked at Um-Kasara region by hooded men in civilian clothes.

Dr Ihab Taha was killed straightway, while his companions sustained injuries of various degrees.

Kurshum further said the attackers open fire on the vehicle the group was travelling in before stealing whatever they found on them
