S. Sudan Kiir sacked labour minister over difference with FVP Taban

August 25, 2018 (JUBA) - South Sudanese President Salva Kiir sacked the General Gathoth Gatkuoth Hothnyang from his position as the minister of labour on the background of a letter his issued against the First Vice President Taban Deng Gai.

On Friday, President Kiir appointed former SPLA chief of staff General Hoth Mai as Minister of Labour, Public Service and Human Resource Development and removed Hothnyang from the position without any explanation.

On Saturday Sudan Tribune learnt that the ministerial change intervened after a letter written by Minister Hothnyang on a headed-paper of the labour ministry calling on the Nasser Youth to support him in his conflict with the First Vice President Taban.

The letter seen by Sudan Tribune accused Taban of causing conflicts within the government in order to weaken President Kiir when he runs for president in 2022. Furthermore, he called on Taban to step down from his position and to cede it either for someone from Bahr El-Ghazal or Eastern Nuer (Greater Fangak, Lou Nuer and Jikany).

Hothnyang went further to claim that Taban excluded the SPLM-IO officers of Nasser during the integration process in the army and other regular forces of the former rebels when they joined the government. He added that Taban did the same thing when it came to the appointment of ambassadors in the ministry of foreign affairs.

He further said the FVP interfered in affairs of the Nasser community in Latjor State and caused a conflict between them before to add that Taban worked to splitting "the Nuer Leadership by creating a group loyal to him".

Taban and Hothnyang were part of the unified SPLM-IO under the leadership of Riek Machar but the two split from Machar after the bloody clashes of July 2016. Taban joined the government under the label of the SPLM-IO but Hothnyang created his own party before to sign a separate deal with President Kiir.

In a statement released Saturday, Latjor State Youth refuted the accusations Hothnyang made against Taban and reiterated their support for the First Vice President. Also, the welcomed the appointment of General James Hoth Mai as Minister of Labour.

" General Gathoth Gatkuoth Hothnyang is known for being a man of indiscipline, chaos and disorganised behaviour. One can just revisit the history of Gathoth Gatkuoth Hothnyang starting from SPLM/SPLA 1983 and different factions he joined until today," said the statement.

The statement said Nasser Community is well represented at all the levels thanks to the efforts exerted by Taban. Also, they urged the former minister to apologize for the first vice president and to "withdraw his statement immediately".

For his part, Hothnyang didn’t issue any statement after his sack on Friday.

However, he released on the social media a news article dated on 19 July about the rejection of the Nuer Council of Elders for the election of General James Hoth Mai as chairman of the Nuer Community.

Shut up! You’re not a Nuer, they have to speak by themselves, you’re the one destroying Nuer in the name of Kiir. Nuer are the ones running to Kiir with the mixed tribal messages, I don’t think that Kiir know the difference between Nuers. Everyone seems to getting into Nuer’s issues while Nuer already believe in violence. Let them destroy themselves!

How would you support someone who believe number rather than ideals? Everyone else knows that Nuer got a big problem in South Sudan and in diaspora, they’re killing themselves world wide and blaming Dinka for it, which is totally insane. I hope that they will realize that ruling the country by force will not come true.

          Kush Natives,

Don’t assume to be an authority on Nuer people. Dinka and Nuer are just two faces of the same coin and are the cause of the current political turmoil in South Sudan. National issues cannot be resolved using the Wunlit 1999 peace conference. Barely after the ink of the Khartoum Peace Jokes dry up, the country would be in crises.....!

Well stated. Instead of Gen Hothnyang and Taban engaging themselves in cheap tribal politics, they would have rather concentrated their energies toward taking their Nuers out of the Juba PoCs, creating jobs for the many idling Nuer youth. I’m told both nyagats haven’t built houses for themselves in their areas. Pathetic losers and food seekers.

Inexplicably, we Equatorians have watched both jienges and nyagateen defecate in front of us. We have not only watched but sniffed that pungent smell of their shit 💩 and haven’t moved away. Why? What is wrong with Equatorians? Must our dignity be sacrificed at the alter of SS nationalism? No. Let them take the capital city to Bentiu or Gogrial.
              Federalism or death.

The Nuer country is largely uninhabitable - flood prone, hellish temperatures during dry season, expansive black cotton soils which is very bad for construction, full of I know more folks, etc. Nuer people are by nature not steadfast: they are prone to defection, backstabbing, etc....

That is it! They seem not to be driven by conviction but by coercion. With such people, Equatorians are better adviced NEvER to count on their loyalty nor allegiance. They are allies of convenience and once there’s no interest, discard them. This is exactly what the jienges are doing with nyagateen. Sad.

Nobody are going to fight for that recycling position. I think everyone in this country are aware on how unstable Salva Kiir is as a person. So dance slowly and don’t break up your legs

Hmm, now South Sudanese people are working very hard to bring forever peace among themselves, but there are some devils who are siding in the dark moving their dirty finger on the keyboard trying to create unrest among South Sudanese people through social media, but at the end, I don’t blame you because there are more of our people who are so blind in their brain to calculate your word

Riek Machar relieved Gen. Hoth bcs of their differences.

Its everywhere, if you have difference with your boss, even God if u don’t repentance can’t forgive u.

Gen. Taban has right to remove any his cabinet who is against him.

"Action is sign of leadership" a leader without action is loose.

Therefore, we do support the move. .

    Thanks Gen. Taban

Well, I guess this is how you handle your tribal issues. As an outsider,I would have hoped Gen Hothnyang were sacked due to ineffectiveness, abuse of office, scandalous misappropriation of funds et al. But just wrangling for tribal leadership is simply bringing the village to town. It’s stupid and old fashioned. Govt positions have become tribal units. Kokora is the solution.

Gen Hothnyang is trapped between cholera and typhoid. He can’t rejoin with Riak and now has no place with Taban. He can’t rebel cuz SSOA would disown him like it has done to fugitive Generals Boutros and Tabuley of NAS. The only option is bend down low and kiss 💋 the foot of the Kiirminal. Oh poor nyagat.
