IGAD says Machar must “reclaim” his position as South Sudan’s First Vice President

August 28, 2016 (JUBA) – The East African regional body, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), said the controversially replaced South Sudanese First Vice President, Riek Machar, must reclaim his position in the transitional unity government in the country as the legitimate First Vice President.

IGAD said they have not changed their position in a communiqué released last month which called for the newly appointed First Vice President, Taban Deng Gai, to step down and for Machar to resume his work as the first deputy president.

The comments from IGAD came days after the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, said the replacement process was an internal matter and did not break the peace agreement.

Kerry made the comments while on a visit to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi last week.

However, IGAD member states including Ethiopia which chairs the body, “questioned” John Kerry’s comments, according to the CCTV Africa which reported from Addis Ababa on Friday.

They reaffirmed their position that Machar is the legitimate First Vice President, who should assume his post upon arrival in Juba, the South Sudanese capital.

Earlier, Machar’s spokesperson, James Gatdet Dak, in comments to Sudan Tribune criticized the comments from the US top diplomat, saying Kerry’s opinion was against the IGAD communiqué as well as against a resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) which described the controversial replacement in Juba as “inconsistent” with the peace agreement.

But President Salva Kiir’s spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny, criticized IGAD for wanting Machar to return to the position, saying Gai has a better working relationship with President Kiir.

Opposition officials on the other hand said Gai is liked by Kiir because he will not ask for the full implementation of the peace deal, but will instead allow for scrapping of major provisions and block the needed reforms in the country.

Somebody I believed he has creditable suggestion has suggested yesterday in the Social Media that IGAD should appoint Riek Machar as deputy Chairperson of IGAD and just leave South Sudan with Taban Deng Gai as FVP because he has proved in shortest period that he and the President have really added up a compatible Peace-Team.

Taban Deng Gai defected to Salva Kiir and he agree with everything Salva Kiir suggests. ARCISS was not made 100 per cent of what Salva Kiir agreed!

See the difference for yourself! No peace implementation because Taban Deng gives all to Kiir in exchange of him remaining as the FVP.

Why can Kiir only work with people who totally surrender to him?

Why does Kiir want to murder, imprison or exile those who want him to follow constitutional laws and procedures?

        What turned Kiir into Mugabe?

The only difference between Kirr and Iddi Amin Dada is that on top of killing people and targeting every tribe that is not his own and favouring his own, Kirr and his group are also thieves! Amin didn’t steal anything from Uganda, Kirr and his own friends robbed the whole of the central bank and his friends stole from the president himself.

Dr Riek Machar has destroyed our country completely and we don’t even want to hear of him, leave alone allowing him to rule this country. Wisdom is better than silver and gold !We consciously fought for this country and will rule it for life come what may. We will never reward our traitors with leadership come what may.

Ethiopia’s PM must know that South Sudan is not Ethiopia. If u want, take him as ur FVP or continue supporting him military & u’ll reap the fruits. A friendly wish must not be put in Igad’s mouth. Let dogs bark & the camel match!

        Shadrack,

Kiir does not hold and is ignorant about rules of fair play. If he ever was in a football team, then rules are a must. You just can’t then decide to be the player and referee at the same time and change rules during a match. Unless of course jaangs have no rules. IGAD is the referee and Kiir has to understand that.

To implement the the peace agreement, the president and first Vice President do not have to be friends....they just have to stick to the agreement. What Taman Seng is doing is dismantling the agreement to please JCE so that he keeps his job! We knew all along he was a sell out, looking for a job!

It’s only Dinkocrats in Juba who will participate in this stupid ping pong game of FVP position for South Sudan. Dr Machar left Juba because he was attacked by a force loyal to Kiir. The ARCISS recognises him as the FVP; IGAD July 2016 reaffirmed that position. Whatever and however El Tabani Deng assumed the position of FVP is better left to Dinka and their JCE to grind their teeth over!!!

South Sudan would not exist if There were no IGAD to push for the first CPA. Don’t you know any history?

The simple reason of supporting Gai has nothing to do with selectivity implementation of peace agreement but Gai can compromise life over position and that is the meaning of being a leader as Kiir did when he compromised self ranked Generals of Nuer to be integrated into SPLA after CPA with no conditions, Gai is the only unifying factor. We need peace not war
