South Sudan rebel defectors deny signing peace deal with government

December 30, 2015 (JUBA) - The political leader of South Sudan’s rebel defectors from the armed opposition faction led by Riek Machar, has denied his group signed a peace deal with the government without the knowledge of their supporters and sympathisers .

Gabriel Changson Chan, in a statement issued on 28 December, clarified that only a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) expressing commitment to engage in the peace process to end the conflict in the nation was reached with government last week.

The MoU, which the statement claimed does not in any way imply the signing of the peace deal, has created serious concerns among the rebel defectors and supporters.

Some members, particularly those who were not part of the process and were not in Nairobi, Kenya where the deal was signed, felt the leaders who signed it may not have them what was actually discussed, prompted them to speculate that a secret deal may have been sealed between the government and the representatives of the group.

“The leadership of the Federal Democratic Party and South Sudan Armed Forces released this statement to ensure that our gallant forces, members, supporters, sympathizers and well wishers that what was signed was a not a peace deal as reported by the media, but just a memorandum of understanding intended to kick start the peace process talks between the parties”, reads the statement Sudan Tribune obtained.

The defectors said they were only responding to an alleged unwritten message delivered to them by the government delegation, stressing that President Salva Kiir wanted them to join the peace process before the formation of a Transitional Government of National Unity.

The two parties, the statement stressed, were now in the process of developing the MoU which they signed into an agreement and the group preferred the South Sudanese government to issue a press release to the public on the its initiative with them.

The group further called for the formation of an official negotiation team with them and that talks between the two sides be hosted and facilitated by the Kenyan government.

“Finally, we once again assure our people that not peace with the government of the republic of South Sudan and our negotiating processes will be transparent and accountable”, observed the statement, which bears the signature of ex-minister Chang.

Stop cheating your "few" supporters Gabriel Changson Chang (aka Lew Chang).

Your MoU calls for return to Juba of your advance team to implement it. You cannot send advance team back to Juba if your MoU is not yet your final agreement.

SPLM-IO sent advance team after final peace agreement.

Your MoU will only give you positions, that is all.

It is almost like the surrender deal of Lul Ruai Koang

See how the government has looked down on you by sending PRIMITIVE Tut Keaw Gatluak (Nuer) to sign on its behalf and there were no international representatives at the signing.

Not a single IGAD leader was there.

You guys will soon find yourselves in Juba and only beg for positions.

Position is what rings in your mind.

But Lul Ruai Koang unfortunately did not get position and still roaming!

You defectors have no principles or objectives at all.

I read in the media that Changson defected from SPLM-IO in rejection of SPLM reunification. Now he will go back to Juba and witness reunification of SPLM. Shame!

Gathoth Gatkuoth did not want to see Kiir as president. Now he will go back to Juba and call him my president.

So what was the point of defecting in the first place?

It is a publicly known fact that this group of Changson is being accommodated in hotels by the SPLA chief of general staff Paul Malong Awan.

Malong told Changson and misled generals to remove Riek from SPLM-IO leadership and Malong and his generals would then remove Kiir from the presidency and the two groups to form government without Kiir and Riek.

Changson tried it, but Malong kept quiet.

    Dear Hon Changson,
People respected you and hold you with high esteem when you were in the SPLM IO, I for one admired your writings and looked at you as a freedom fighter for your people, I am now dismayed to find that you have cheapened and degraded your self to only a level of a position seeker and money opportunist. it would have sounded better if you were seeking negotiation with SPLM IO.

You are talking, it is far better for him and his group to return to SPLA-IO. Because we are all aware that, the only peace which is taking place now is the one that is happening in Addis and not Kenya. That must be fake peace otherwise
