DUP mediates to contain differences within Sudan’s rebel alliance

October 20, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) led by Mohamed Osman al-Merghani said it contacted several leaders from the rebel umbrella Sudan Revolutionary Forces (SRF) to contain the differences over the chairmanship of the alliance.

A conflict erupted Sunday between the groups of the SRF over the presidency of the alliance, following their failure to reach an agreement on how to make the transfer of power.

DUP deputy spokesperson, Mohamed Sid Ahmed Sir el-Khatim, said he contacted several SRF leaders to overcome the differences among factions’ leaders over the chairmanship of the alliance.

Sir el-Khatim, who is also the person in charge of the coordination dossier with the SRF, told Sudan Tribune that the divisions within the rebel umbrella organization would further exacerbate the Sudanese crisis, pointing it will complicate the task of the government negotiators.

He stressed that the unity of the SRF will push forward the national dialogue process, noting that the success of the permanent ceasefire initiative launched by the DUP depends largely on the unity of the armed movements.

On Sunday, the DUP launched an initiative calling for holding a pre-dialogue meeting in Addis Ababa under the auspices of the African Union (AU) and in the presence of all relevant parties in order to agree on a permanent ceasefire and to determine the necessary guarantees for the participation of the rebel leaders in the dialogue conference.
