Bashir vows to support development projects in N. Kordofan

April 3, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The incumbent president and candidate of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) Omer Hassan al-Bashir has pledged to support development projects in North Kordofan state.

Speaking in an electoral meeting in the capital of North Kordofan state El-Obeid on Friday, Bashir stressed the state is capable of implementing development projects in areas of drinking water, hospitals and paved roads.

He underscored the federal government would offer the necessary support to the government of North Kordofan state, saying they will build a network of roads including the high way linking El-Obied to Sudan’s twin capital city of Omdurman.

Since taking office in 2013, the governor of the state, Ahmed Haroun, has adopted the North Kordofan Renaissance Document (NKRD) which includes several services and development projects.

The program funding relies largely on Nafeer (a call to mobilize) of all citizens including poor workers.

Bashir has also directed Haroun to transform all schools built with thatch into permanent structures and to apply mandatory primary education for permanent residents as well as the nomads in the state.

He promised to extend primary health coverage across the state, pledging to provide a midwife for each neighbourhood and village.

The Sudanese president emphasised the federal government would push forward the Nafeer, expressing commitment to pay four pounds for each pound paid by the state’s inhabitants as stated in the NKRD.

North Kordofan, which forms part of Sudan’s commercial heartland, is a hub for the country’s agriculture, livestock and gum Arabic industries.

Sudan’s parliamentary and presidential election is scheduled for 13 April.
