Algeria scrutinizes travel by its citizens to Sudan

July 27, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – Algerian authorities are now keeping a close watch on their citizens travelling to seven Arab countries witnessing conflict or in proximity to areas of conflict for fear that they may be attempting to join terrorist groups especially ISIS.

algeria.jpgAn unnamed security source speaking to Turkey-based Anadolu news agency said that they imposed special measures on Algerian travellers especially those under 40 years old of age seeking entry to Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Lebanon and Sudan.

“The control procedures include verifying the true destination for travellers, checking dates and the reasons for their departure to these states in collaboration with the local authorities concerned” the source said.

“More than 90 percent of Algerians who joined jihadist groups arrived in Syria after passing through one or two Arab countries as a camouflage so it has become necessary to check the travel by Algerians to or near areas of conflict”.

In recent months it was revealed that dozens of Sudanese medical students mostly from one university in possession of western passports flew to Syria via Turkey to join ISIS including the daughter of a senior foreign ministry diplomat.

Sudanese officials accused internal and external circles of standing behind the mass wave of recruitment from Sudan.
