“Today our fighters managed to destroy a camp of the Sudanese soldiers and militiamen in West Kordofan locality of Ghubaysh near the border with North Darfur state,” JEM chief negotiator Ahmed Tugud told Sudan Tribune on Monday evening.

Tugud added they killed an important number of government forces and captured 38 vehicles pointing they are still chasing the remaining soldiers and militiamen in area.

The Sudanese army spokesperson was not reachable for comment.

The Sudanese army clashed during the weekend with JEM rebels in South Darfur state allegedly coming from the neighbouring South Sudan.

On Sunday, the Sudanese government military spokesperson, al-Sawarmi Khaled, said they crushed JEM fighters at al-Nikhara area, south of the locality of Tulus in South Darfur and inflicted on them heavy losses in lives and equipment.

Khartoum further accused Juba of harbouring and supporting the rebel forces which for long time were based in South Kordofan in the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) controlled areas.

Tugud admitted that the Sudanese government troops ambushed a “small force” of his group but added that additional rebel fighters joined the battlefield at al-Nikhara and defeated Khartoum army.

On Saturday the Sudan Liberation Movement – Minni Minnawi claimed taking part in the attack, however several JEM officials said only their troops were involved in the fighting without the participation of their allied rebel groups in the region.

The rebel chief negotiator said they would continue the fight, asserting it is the only language the government of president Omer al-Bashir understands.

“The regime refuses negotiations (with us) and wants to impose its reality through violence,” he said.
