South Sudan opposition leader goes missing in Juba

April 3rd, 2015 (JUBA) – The interim president of South Sudan’s People’s Liberal Party (PLP), Peter Mayen Majongdit, went missing on Wednesday in the capital, Juba.

According to a press statement released by the opposition party’s leadership, Majongdit was picked up in front of his family home at night by two government security agents.

The party condemned the arbitrary arrest of their leader, calling for his immediate release.

The statement, a copy of which was extended to Sudan Tribune, said Majongdit’s whereabouts remains unknown.

“We believe he is being held in by the security without access to justice,” the statement said, with the party describing Majongdit’s arrest as unlawful and an attack on freedom of expression.

PLP said it suspects Majongdit’s detention was linked to comments he made during an interview with Juba Monitor on 30 March imploring the leadership of the country’s ruling party (SPLM) to fight corruption.

The PLP has calls on security agents to respect the country’s constitution which stipulates that no-one should be detained for more than 24 hours without a trial in a competent court of law.
