May 6, 2014 (WASHINGTON) – The US treasury department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced on Tuesday that it has imposed sanctions on two military officers from both sides of the South Sudan conflict.

US president Barack Obama issued an executive order last month directing his administration to impose sanctions on South Sudanese parties responsible for ongoing violence and human rights abuses in the world youngest nation.

Today’s decision impacts General Peter Gadet and Marial Chanuong Mangok according to OFAC statement.

Gadet is a general leading former vice-president Riek Machar’s forces in Unity state, while Mangok is a major general commanding the presidential guard unit within the South Sudanese army (SPLA).

Mangok and Gadet are now banned from travelling to the US and any assets they have in US financial institutions will be frozen.

The United Nations and the international community condemned recent atrocities allegedly committed against civilians in Bentiu when the rebel fighters led by Gadet recaptured the capital of Unity state.

The presidential guard is accused of killing civilians from Nuer ethnic group in Juba last December.

“The measures taken against Marial Chanuong and Peter Gadet are only a first step and should serve as a clear warning to those in the Government of South Sudan and those who have taken up arms against it: the United States is determined to hold accountable those who choose violence,” US ambassador to the UN Samantha Power said in a statement.

Power also said that the US “will also seek in the United Nations Security Council to authorise targeted sanctions against those who continue to undermine South Sudan’s stability”.

how come the US issued sanctions to a dead person. General gatdet Yak got killed since January 2014 in Bor battle. please,if you are really serious, sanction rebel leader Riek Himself because all this befalling South Sudan are of his made. I therefore urge US not to hastate and leave him un punished. if left without being taught a lesson he will repeat the same thing as he did earlier in 1991.

      Good start!
And Kiir, Riek and Museveni should be taken to the ICC.

Sanctions alone are not enough, future perpetrators of such crimes need to be deterred by punishing those who committed crimes and atrocities in South Sudan. Leaving Kiir and Riek untouched is a big betrayal for the S. Sudanese and the country as a whole. Sanctioning Gadet and Marial Chanuong makes sense because Marial killed Nuers AND Gadet killed Bor civilians.

When you punish somebody, you want them to feel the pain. These types of sanctions will be meaningless because Gatdet and Marial don’t have assets in New York and Washington DC or anywhere in the US. They need to be indicted by ICC together with Kiir.

Dear US Department Of Treasury, meddlesome Yoweri Museveni and his wife Salva Kiir deserve maximum sanctions instead of two Generals mentioned from the world bodies, because they are once who fueling/igniting South Sudan crisis at de moment.Salva Kiir became M7’s puppet into extend of taking permission from warmonger-M7 if it is possible to have a sex with his own illiterate lady Mary Ayendit.

Peter Gatdet Yak was already dead. The political background of Riek Machar is obious. He know that Marial Chinuong was tougher and he tried to find a way that he can drag in Marial Chinuong in atrocities so that the military intelligent department under Marial’s leadership should become exhausted and gained power.

Marial Chunuong Mangok is the reason for the killing of Nuer civilians in Juba, those civilians include children, women and the elderly to make it worse. But his superiors who order him to carry out the killings must be brought before the law and account for the crimes they committed.

President Salva Kiir was loyalt to his master Dr. John Garang, he never critised anybody more senior than him with that humble, one day most South Sudanese would regret it to see Kiir out of power. This triggered sanction is a good indication of how US is favoring Mr. Riek. On 15 December 2013, it was Mr. Riek who gave Gatdet orders to organise his forces to take up arms against the govt

You have stated very correct facts about Peter Gadet brother, as far as I know Gadet emerged from white army for Nuer civillians that used to and still raid cattle in what they called currently Tonj East and Tonj North. I don’t see any reason why US is using Gadet to cover up Riek Machar when they know Gadet own nothing in US and will never travel to US because he can only speak Nuer.Shame

It is clear that Obama was the one order Riek to make coup. Gatdet and Marial did nothing. Marial was to protect government,S sudan people and properties. Gatdet was order by Riek to capture Bor and also to kill civilian in Unity state. What is wrong with Obama leadership? I understand that Gatdet was the first to sanction because he have problem with Riek.

Gen. Peter Gatdet cannot just face sancion any howly like this because he did not involve in the massacres as happened in Juba when Salva Kiir, Paul Malong, Marial Chinuong and the likes killed almost 17,613 innocents Nuer civilians in Juba.
secondly Ge, Gatdet is not an easy man to be compared with coward Marial Chinuong.
