S. Sudan army says recaptured oil-rich town from rebels

January 10, 2014 (JUBA) - The South Sudanese army (SPLA) has recaptured Unity state capital, Bentiu from rebel control, the military spokesperson said on Friday.

“I can confirm to you that the SPLA is now in full control of Bentiu, which was under the control of the rebels. It was recaptured at about 2:30pm today [Friday]”, Phillip Aguer told Sudan Tribune by phone.

He said the army would first carry out an assessment of the area before further details on casualties involved during the clashes can be made public.

Sudan Tribune was unable to obtain confirmation from rebels on the army’s victory.

Bentiu fell under rebel control after Maj.Gen. James Koang, the military fourth division commander defected on 21 December and declared his opposition to forces loyal to President Salva Kiir.

The dissident general later assumed governorship of Unity state, establishing an interim administration and appointed a new speaker of the state assembly speaker as well as county commissioners.

Fighting erupted in the country’s capital, Juba in mid-December after a dispute between the president guards, later spreading to other states, mainly Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile.

Fear that South Sudan’s military could soon retake Bentiu from a faction of the army that defected over two weeks ago led to thousands of civilians to flee the area.

Over 8,000 people reportedly took refuge at a United Nations base in Bentiu, the UN’s top humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan, Toby Lanzer, said on Wednesday. Also, over 60,000 people are reportedly sheltering in UN bases in Juba, Bor and other parts of the country.

The rebel commander James Koang joined Dr. Fool Riek blindly and appointed himself Governor of unity State before guarantee control over the key strategic areas. He joined rebell on 21/12/2013 and after 21 days in Office ST could not confirm his whereabouts. Disappeared without trace or he’s on the run for his life with all the appointed officials without decrees?Nuer language was used in SLA.

In EES/Torit, Taposa language was never used as official language in the opening session of State Parliament. Bari language was not used in CES, Zande Language was not used in WES, no any tribal language was used in the rest of the States. Peter Gadet was mainly engaged in looting, foods, sugar, money, Mosquitos nets and killing; he has no time to appoint himself Governor of Jonglei or form govt.

Whatever the hands of the "White Army" land food items, they did not listen to Peter Gadet’s order any more since they all civilians, mobilized to come and loot, destroy structures, government, public and private facilities. Peter Gadet was not ready to from a government where he even destroyed his would-be office if he decides to appoint himself governor of Jonglei. He was afraid of Yau Yau.

Dr. Fool Riek Machar has never been a good commander in chief because he instructs his field commanders with different messages. He says " appoint yourself if you can or destroy what’re in sight" because we might lose if Government forces arrive. Noe it is true Dr. Fool Riek lost and will continue to lose in any political, violent or electoral endeavor. Stay tuned, I will be right back, Kim Deng,

The fight should be confined between spla and looters rebels. The war has nothing to do with nuer or dinka civilians. Riek is the enemy of development as could be seen through town he capture. Bentiu, bor and malakal are totally looted by riek forces. No leader should let his rebels to loot civilians properties except riek. We don’t want jungle out ss, therefore riek must be defeated outright.

Iam not sure whether Bor will be capture quickly as the civilians are dying from cholera in Guolyar. the fighting forces are under the command of a Kongoor drunkard called kongoor Bashire. spla must make changes if they want Bortown to be liberated from looters.

The battle to recapture Bor will be costly to both rebels and spla. Gaweer, Jikeny Kiir and Jikeny Doar had arrived already.that is why spla is not able to make an inroad to Malual chaat and malou. spla need aleast 12,000 troops to take this town. the white army plus the defeated soldiers from Malakal are all in Bor and its surroundings.

        Malakal County Simon,
Pul Jang was birded again by Kirr and those of Minytel brothers to fought for Dinka.
According the source from the ground, these mercenaries are not Sudan rebels. Rather they are Bashir Jigween militias given to Kirr to help him to security the oil. But Bashir and Kirr are trying to blindfolded the world that they didn’t joint forces. But we will defeat them still.
