Lakes state moves to protect Nuer civilians

December 23, 2013 (RUMBEK) - Authorities in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes state, have relocated over 100 members of the Nuer ethnic group who were living in the state’s eight counties to a military barracks in Rumbek on Monday to protect them from possible attack.

Unrest in South Sudan over the last week, triggered by a dispute within the Presidential Guard in Juba, has seen civilians targeted on the basis of their ethnicity.

Rumbek East county commissioner David Marial Gumke and Lakes state governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol made the decision to relocate the Nuer civilians to protect them from revenge attacks.

Reports that people were targetted on the basis of their tribe during the violence in Juba last week led to the conflict spreading to other parts of the country, with the commanders of the army in Jonglei and Unity state defecting and siding with former vice president Riek Machar.

Kiir has accused Machar and others of attempting to oust him in a coup. But they have strongly denied this. Senior members of South Sudan’s ruling party - from a range of ethnic groups including the Dinka - have been detained in Juba. Both sides have agreed to talks but no progress has been made public.

"As a commissioner of this county and with directive of South Sudan president Salva Kiir Mayardit, I act to protect all Nuer native in my county, I have send 100 plus Nuer people to Malou military barrack with help from South Sudan police services and the SPLA to relocate all Nuer for safety” said David Marial Gumke.

Lakes state governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol repeat his call for people in his state not to become involved in the crisis.

Speaking on government-owned Radio Rumbek FM 98, Dhuol said that the "public of Rumbek must involve in this current crisis. What happened in Juba is Juba politics and Lakes state is not party to power wrangling in Juba."

He called upon public of Lakes state, which is dominated by the Dinka, to maintain good peaceful relations with the Nuer, South Sudan’s second largest ethnic group after the Dinka.

"Our goal is peace and construction of South Sudan" he said.

Dinka have patient and sympathy on human life, unlike animal called Nuer who doesn’t have patient in them. Those 100 plus where Dinka in Nuer land, they would been already killed.

In Wau and Mapel there are more than 2,000 Nuers but nobody touched them, Dinkas are God fearing people unlike Nuers who pretend to be Pastors but preach killing of Dinkas as a revenge. Now they have killed all Dinkas living in Nuer lands esp Nassir, Akobo, Bentiu, Mayom,Pagak. Now fighting is going on in Malakal, in case they win, all Dinkas there will definitaley be executed as in Bor.

Gat gan kiir, if you are primitive, don’t expect dinkas to be like you. in fact killing defendless person/s is sign of cowardness. it does not make you strong person or warrior. perhaps you should remember what happened to your nuer militias who attacked lake state in 90’s. we sons of lake state are more than warriors who fight for just war not greedness war like what your uncivilized riek is doin

      My dear
No tribe is patient than the Nuer we all know for revenge rather than instigation. See 20000 pple allowed to lake state from bor, all Dinkas in Gajaak areas were given to Ethiopian govt but the Dinka govt in Juba fights Nuer children, women and unarmored Nuermen with military tanks. Who is human btwn Nuer and Dinka. The JUBA MASSACRE ON NUER is inhumane!

War was not a solution to Liberation of South Sudan but choice of the Majority through voting. Riek Machar will never become a president of this country through power or war or through major choice of voting unless somebody free from such prejudices. Riek Machar is struggling for nothing. Advice him to stop rebellion he ’Atuut Dhooldit’

peter mading. I think Gat Gan and Naath raani felt ashame of what their kinmen have done to innocern dinka people in their states. they just want us(dinka) to share their shame of killing defendless people in their states. since their primitive leader(riek) can’t e ashame of his past history, how would the people he rule act?. same all nuer mentality.

Hopefully, Lake State will be blessed. Thank you Lakes State for not killing the Nuer like they did in Juba. I hope we have learned something that Unity is the best way forward for God to bless us with rich land and rich country. I am against tribalism but I am very emotional person if my tribe Nuer are killed. I do not think about holding back because it makes my go crazy.

Riek and Gadet are doomest idiots who could never listen to peace, but war. Kiir although he seemed to have neglected Lake State somehow, he is patriot and better than doom angel, riek. Please we never need them there for a week.
