But just who is James Wani Igga? Many would probably ask.

Born in 1949, in a village called Krillo, Juba County, attended elementary studies at Kaperto Bush School in 1959 and later Okaru between 1962 and1965. His studies in Okaru were disrupted by the civil unrest in his area.

Thereafter, he moved to Tonj intermediate school, in the present day Warrap State, where he continued with elementary education until he joined Rumbek senior secondary between 1972 and 1975.

Igga was one of the first South Sudanese who were accorded scholarship to study at various public and private universities in Egypt after the signing of the 1972 Addis Ababa agreement, which ended the first civil war between north and south Sudan that lasted for 17 years. He attended Cairo University of Economics and was part of the groups that formed the Juwama Africa Patriotic Organization (JAPO), becoming its chairperson.

JOINING SPLM

The new South Sudan vice president joined the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in 1985, instead of returning to Khartoum after finishing studies in Cairo, Egypt.

He was recommended and commissioned to the rank of captain upon joining the movement and was one of the commanders selected by the leadership of the rebel movement under the commander of late John Garang de Mabior to attend a Division Commanders’ course in Cuba, in 1986.

Igga later rose to become major after completing commanders training course following his returned to the SPLA liberated and controlled areas.

ACTIVE ROLES

He commanded Shakus (hammer) battalion in 1987, becoming the zonal commander for Central Equatoria and became the member of SPLA command. Igga was one of the respected leaders by civilian population in the Equatoria Region, pulling him closer to the late John Garang.

He was one of the senior rebel commanders and representatives at the peace talks in Nairobi, Kenya with the SPLA-Nasir faction after the split in 1991. He remained with SPLA-Torit faction after the split. He later became the head of its delegation in November 1991 to dialogue peaceful settlement.

In addition, Igga was also part of the delegation which accompanied late Garang for a roundtable discussion about peace held in the Ugandan capital Kampala in 1993, mediated by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). He helped the movement recruit from the Equatoria region, after launching a mobilization campaign articulating the vision, objective and mission of the rebel group.

He further helped to establish a technical committee for intellectuals in 2000, after he was appointed chairperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement for political affairs commission. The body had a mission to help the movement with the laying out structures for civil administration in the then SPLM/A liberated and controlled areas, both in the South and north.

Igga was one of the top rebel officials appointed as Caretaker governors and posted to Upper Nile State in 2005 after late John Garang became the first vice president in Sudan and president of Southern Sudan. He became the first speaker of the Southern Sudan Legislative during the interim period, a position he held until South Sudan became an independent following the successful 2011 referendum.

IGGA THE AUTHOR

Meanwhile, Igga is the author of four books, namely; Rediscovering Our Roots, Fundamental of SPLM Political Work and Orientation, 2001, Basic Concept for SPLM Political enlightenment, 2001 and Battle Fought and the Secrecy of Diplomacy.

A Roman Catholic, Igga is married and has children.

      Kikiji,
We don’t have problem with Igga serving under incompetent Kiir and enjoying their few days left in power before...ooops!
Wani Igga tortured Equatorians to death during the war. That picture he took with Dr. Lam Akol and Cde William Nyuon Bany is a reminder that he was an Equatorian butcher with Kuol Manyang Juuk. Good that he shamed Equatorians and sold his soul to the DEVIL.......

I would have told Equatorians a million congratulations if incompetent Kiir appointed a strong principled Equatorian politician such as Joseph Bakasoro, Gen. Alfred Lado Gore, Clement Wani, Obote Mamur and Gen. Thomas Cirino. But that comedian, submissive stooge called Wani Igga who worships the DEVIL (Kiir) and failed the parliament, is a BAD sign of worse leadership: dictatorial and incompetent.

Greediness will kept Nuer tribe out of leadership in their entire existence, they will never learn from their mistake, they do not have leadership skills, food is the only path that directed them,
Chances of Wani became a president are high. See now the patient he has has earn him the spot unlike those greedy who got jealous for other hard working ability, Nuer are. Hopeless, useless, wicked,

We’ve allowed you to loot our oil. be happy. take that temporary pride and swallow it. Mind you, we dont want South Sudan to look like Somalia. We’ve sacrificed too much for it. Comes 2015? I fear for the minority tribes.

                  Kon,
You will die a liar. It could have made more sense had you said that Dinka are like Oromo of Ethiopia. By war or peace, you can’t have a chance against a Nuer. We just had our independent yesterday and its childish to compare a new nation with an old one. Remember that most eastern Nuer lands were formerly Dinka or Jurs but eastern Nuer chased them single-handedly and occupied these areas.

Dinka SPLm. You got it wrong. The Nuer are not greedy at all. They are very good people but they do not like others people to humiliate them. There has not been a Nuer president so why would you say that the Nuer are hungry with power. It is you Dinka who always like to control everything. But you cannot silence Nuer. Nuer is a huge Nation and they know what they are going to do in the future.

But the question is; what did Bakasoro accomplished in the SPLM more than Wani Igga? Jobs are given to those with outstanding records in the SPLM, and not appeased folks like you from the fighting leadership!

Nuer don’t have problem with James Wani or some Equatoria politicians, however, they need to stop acting like foreigners in South Sudan. worshipping Dinka to get positions will never make them good leaders or true heroes to this country. Equatorians should follow people like Mamur and Alfred Lado Gore.

After 8 years when he will become very popular in the whole country, the Dinka will remove him. Why? the Dinka does not like anyone who can compete with Salva Kiir or any other from Dinka.
