July 15, 2013 (BOR) - At least five people were killed and four injured in a Sunday night attack on Pator cattle camp in Jonglei state’s Twic East county, a local South Sudanese official told Sudan Tribune.

The acting commissioner, Madol Alier said he suspects rebels loyal to David Yauyau and members from the Murle tribe carried out the attack.

“We were surprised with the attack at Pator camp in Nyuak payam [district]. The attackers fired at the camp, killing four people, wounding four others and killing 32 cattle,” Alier said on Monday.

He further revealed that four of those killed were from Ayual community in Nyuak payam, while the other is believed have been one of the attackers.

Alier largely blamed the Murle tribe and rebels operating in Pibor county of allegedly carrying out the surprise attack.

“These are armed group of David Yauyau, they were heavily armed with machine guns. We identified them, they are from David Yauyau and Murle community in general,” said the acting commissioner.

The raiders reportedly made off with 476 heads of cattle, which were recovered later on Monday.

“In the morning [Monday], the community police, prison and wildlife perused the enemy and they recovered the raided cattle at 3:00pm,” Alier confirmed.

Cattle raids, counter and tribal retaliatory attacks between the Lou Nuer and the Murle in South Sudan’s largest state have led to several deaths and loss of animals.

LOU-NUER ADVANCE AGAINST YAUYAU REBELS

Meanwhile, Jonglei governor Kuol Manyang Juuk, said the Lou-Nuer’s armed youth have advanced against Yauyau rebels in their recent retaliatory offensive against the latter, expressing fears of a humanitarian disaster in the area.

Juuk issued a press statement on Saturday in Juba after briefing the country’s vice-president, Riek Machar on the gravity of the situation in Jonglei.

Reports reaching the authorities suggested that several rebel commanders were reportedly killed during the two-day fierce battles when their main bases in Nanaam and Monyibol in Gumruk were overrun by the armed youth, who captured hundreds of weapons, including anti-aircrafts weapons.

Sources say rebel leader Yauyau survived the attack, which reportedly claimed the lives of many of his senior officers.

Officials said South Sudan army (SPLA) was preparing to confiscate the heavy weapons captured from the Luo Nuer youth.

Aid agencies said more than 200 wounded Lou-Nuer youth were on Saturday flown to Bor hospital for treatment.

There is no news about the number of casualties on the rebels’ side and the fate of their wounded, making it difficult to evacuate those injured.

The Luo Nuer armed youth are, however, said to be advancing in Gumruk areas in pursuit of the rebels. It is feared that the attack will create a grave humanitarian disaster among the Murle civil populations.

Juuk said the SPLA was unable to respond to the renewed inter-communal violence, blaming the timing of the offensive, as rains are hampering the mobility of the forces on the ground.

He further said the fighting also took place in forested areas, which are inaccessible by land.

Helicopters belonging to the SPLA and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been airlifting the wounded Lou-Nuer youth to the hospitals in the state capital, Bor, the UN-sponsored Miraya FM radio reported on Monday.

What was Dr. Defector Riek Machar’s vision that made him to invade Borland and slaughtered unarmed civilians that comprised of women, children and old? Wasn’t it his wickedness? Wasn’t it the same Dr. Defector Riek Machar’s vision that brought LRA to our state (Western Equatoria)? What kind of leadership do you blindly see he has?? Dr. Defector Riek Machar is not a leader. He is a defector.

How come Lou Nuer civilians managed to go to Nanaam strong hold of David Yau Yau, and managed to destroyed his based and captured too many heavy weapons and SPLA did not even captured one during their campaigns against Yau Yau in Boma.
This is warning to Dinka, especially internet warriors, particularly lost who beat the drum of the war right here on sudantribune, Imagine SPLA become weapons

You make it sound as though David Yau Yau was a highly capable veteran of war, commanding a disciplined and well trained armed force. The forces of David Yau Yau are also just armed civilians, every bit as untrained as the Lou-Nuer that confronted them in this instance. David Yau Yau was merely a theology student before his rebellion, with absolutely no prior military experience.

Pray tell, how does the SPLA’s performance against David Yau Yau specififically relate to the Dinka!? You do realize that Peter Gadet is in charge of operations against Yau Yau!? And surely you also understand that the vast majority of the Nuer soldiers within our armed forces were Paulino Matip’s men; men that were absorbed and integrated into our armed forces in 2006.

The SPLA has over 200, 000 troops; with over 50, 000 Nuer troops having joined the SPLA in 2006 with the integration of Matip’s forces. The SPLA is now filled to the brim with Nuer troops; the very same troops that have been involved in operations against Yau Yau. How is this trifling affair a "warning" to the Dinka!?

If you mean to imply that the Dinka should somehow fear these forces, then you are grasping at terribly uninformed straws... because angry Dinka troops from greater Upper Nile and Bahr el Gazal defeated these very same forces in the counterattacks of 1992-3-4; counterattacks that penetrated deep into Uror, Akobo, Nyirol, Yuai and Ayod — Nuer counties.

Don’t add fuel to fire by your lies and put your people at risk because your lies can be proven easily by the Lou-Nuer youth on the ground. The Nuer are 65% in the army as we speak. You can blame Dr. Riek for what happened in 1991 in his leadership but you cannot blame him for what is happening at the moment because he is not the governor and he is not the president either. Dr. John Garang, Kiir Mayardit, Samuel Abu-John, Ali Gbutala, Kuol Manyang, etc, are some of our founding fathers of South Sudan, but Dr. Defector Riek Machar and his team are our true enemies of the country.

Murle will defeat all jonkoz tomorrow, but the major problem now is: the war between Nuer and Dinka which is imminent in Juba itself. The reason is being the hatred harbored by Dinka against Nuer for teaching them a lesson and chasing them away from Bor in 1991. WHen they ran to Equatoria, they always refuse to go back because they say, they fear Nuer. But this time it is also for leadership. WAR

The vast area appropriated by the Nuer during the nineteenth century was formerly occupied by a Dinka, Anyuak and Burun population. The fate of this population is one of the most interesting questions pertaining to Nuer expansion. How many Dinka, Anyuak, Burun… were killed by the Nuer? How many died of starvation? How many migrated to other areas? And how many were assimilated into Nuer community?

Back in 1985-6, I personally involved in disarming a group of heavily armed dinka spla-ers who stole cows and tried to rape young girls in eastern Nuerland. We disarmed them with spears and the sheer force of will. We told them they are not going to survive if they didn’t surrender and put down their guns.

They were ten,all armed; we were 2 only armed with 2 spears. Our instinct was to fight, their was to flight. Being a warrior involves that(fight or flight). Rommel, your genetic make up is to flight, it is innate reaction in you. The Nuer DNA has no fear in it. Period. It is not the superiority of weaponry, it is always the superiority and mindset of a warrior that prevails.

It is upto Murle & Nuers to see the game. So don’t blame Kuol. The Nuers & Murle should be natural allies in Jonglei. But they were too naive & ignorance to see it. The Nuers like 12 noon, day time, evening, night, occupation of enemies lands, while Murle only like hit & run.
